Thank you, Bev. Watching now. Baby BB not sure what is going on except he does not like it one bit. Almost backed himself right off the nest a few times.

I remember watching Norfolk Botanical Gardens banding. I still cannot believe that nest was destroyed and the tree cut down.

Thank you again for recording this and posting.

"Mama Eagle Throwing Shade
Hanging out with mom is cool when you're an eaglet.
Aside from all the things this mother of three has done for them - from laying them, incubating them and feeding them carrion beak-to-beak, she also acts as their own personal "mombrella" to keep them from exposure in the direct sunlight. Mom is so chill. Watch the family, live from Santa Cruz Island in California's Channel Island National Park on the Sauces Eagle cam!"

:egg15: Stormy (@ Big Bear) rescue attempt coordination from entangled fishing line has been initiated by national forest biologist. Must find climber ... (took bander 1 hour to climb) ... don't know if will be today or tomorrow. Perhaps, someone will be able to follow from here if there is interest.

:eggthumb: Stormy freed himself eventually!! This started yesterday morning and he was anchored to one small area of the nest for several hours, I believe. Also, earlier I witnessed one of the parents working on the fishing line. The blue stringer and possibly 2 monofilament lines remain in the nest.

For those who were were wondering about Dr Sharpe’s comments on the BB nest and why they breed so early, this is what I found:

Unfortunately, the eagles don't determine when they lay. The previous female also laid between late December and late January, which in my opinion is about 2-3 months too early for the nest location. I think it is a weird problem related to being at a relatively low latitude in southern California, but at a high altitude. Nesting generally occurs earlier at low latitudes (November to December in Florida versus late-April through May in Alaska), but low latitudes generally don't have the high elevations, and thus cold weather conditions, found at Big Bear Lake.
It is only because of a man-made lakes that they are even able to breed in the local southern California mountains. It is hard to overcome the evolutionary control of the timing of reproduction.

( :eggthumb: This is commentary that I copied from chat and the top sentence is not mine, but of the one who posted this on chat. Dr. Sharpe, the NIW research ecologist, made these comments @ a previous time. It could be excerpts or not, I don't know. But I thought it sounds right on and veeeeeery, interesting to ponder!! I had thought nature is nature and the eagles were doing as they should in this area and had no idea Big Bear lake was man-made. Just reminds you of how little understanding you have of a place, unless you live there!! So, the eagles would not be here if the MANMADE lakes were not here .......... And will they be able to adapt .......... WOW!! :dancegirl: )

( :eggthumb: When you see Institute for Wildlife Studies comment on chat here, that person is solely Dr. Sharpe.)

:eggthumb: Thanks, Gigi!! Here's how one of the folks responded when he realized that I was not familiar with the lakes @ this site and I have to tell you ... I was stunned @ how long the lakes have been here considering they are man-made. Now to find out when the first eagles arrived. Are we witnessing adaptation in progress? I don't know. Dr. Sharpe has a PHD in Zoology and he refers to the chat and chatters as a permanent record of citizen scientists. Big Bears is not a part of The Institute of Wildlife Studies as the other sites here are and I don't understand the origin of the relationship with Big Bear. I love all of these sites and the knowledge you have access to!!

“Big Bear Lake is a man-made lake. In 1883, plans were made to construct a rock damn that would hold water to supply the citrus farms in Redlands. In 1885 the first water began to flow after 26 months of planing and construction. The first damn held 25,000 acre feet of water. The new damn construction was started in 1910 and was completed a year later. It nearly tripled the amount of water in the reservoir.

You should gigi, it changed my perspective when I realized if not for the man-made lakes, they would not breed here and how to overcome breeding in the same latitude as southern eagles, but rearing them in the equivalence of a northern latitude climate for same time period, which an eagle from Alaska would never do! Will they be able to adapt. Or does adaptation even have anything to do with this? Have they been breeding here since the man made lakes came in the 1800's and this is it? Or did they arrive to breed in more recent years. Still need to find out when they first started breeding here. Wish I were a zoologist or a research ecologist or a professional tree-climbing biologist who it takes 1 hour to climb to a nest! Of course I am none of these, but just a curious person. We really are affecting wildlife with our wants and needs in ways not intended, but it's a done deal just the same ...
