Nest Facts:

"The Decorah North eagles are nesting on private property north of Decorah. Their very large nest is located in a white oak tree in a scrap of forest bordering a valley and an excellent stream is located just across a field where cattle are pastured.
The nest is 56 feet off the ground
It is nine feet long at its longest point
It is seven feet wide at its widest point
It has a total area of 49 feet
It is about 5.5 feet high
The eagles began building it in 2013."

I stopped by to see how this nest was doing this morning and was surprised at the size difference between these eaglets. We have small, medium and large!

Youngest eaglet [hatched 4/23] has died. He was so tiny and the odds were definitely against him. :sorrow:

Raptor Resource Project

5-12-16 ~ We are saddened to report that DNN3 passed away last night. We aren't sure of any one factor, but certainly food availability, sibling aggression, and hypothermia all played a role. Amy has written a blog announcement about DNN3 and we hope that you will look there for more information.
In the meantime, we welcome your thoughts and memories of the short impact s/he made in the 19 days shared with us. This photo from 5/7 shows the spunk and spark and fierce heart we saw. After waking from a nap, DNN3 looked around, stood tall, gave a rawr, and had a "don't mess with me" look. That's just one of our favorite images and you can find more in the Decorah North Nest photo album posted in the thread right below this one.

Now it looks as if the entire family may all die. This is absolutely horrible!! :(

Quote:
At Decorah North Nest, we are watching a very urgent and sad situation that looks like it could be the result of poisoning by something the eagles ate. We are recording and monitoring what is going on for possible action or intervention, but have purposely decided that this should not be broadcast to the public.

We don't know anything more at this time, but wish to express our sincere thanks for all of your good thoughts and well wishes as we are working through this tough time! We will give reports here as we continue to monitor privately and work with other agencies.
