At Decorah North Nest, we are watching a very urgent and sad situation that looks like it could be the result of poisoning by something the eagles ate. We are recording and monitoring what is going on for possible action or intervention, but have purposely decided that this should not be broadcast to the public.

We don't know anything more at this time, but wish to express our sincere thanks for all of your good thoughts and well wishes as we are working through this tough time! We will give reports here as we continue to monitor privately and work with other agencies.

They have announced the passing of DN2. This is a really sad situation for all. :tissue:

I found a short video of them from this afternoon. DN2 is obviously already deceased. DN1 doesn't look that bad but Mom looks awful. What I noticed most was how dilated her eyes were.

PLEASE do not watch if it may upset/disturb you.

This is the latest update from their Facebook page:

"9:15pm CT ~ Decorah North Nest Update
- A quick note from Amy: We have two eagle experts, including a veterinarian, monitoring the eagles privately tonight. Thanks for all of your good wishes and prayers for the eagle family. They are much appreciated.
RRP Executive Director, John Howe, sadly announces that it appears DN2 has passed. RRP closed the live camera view some time ago to spare viewers additional heartache, but privately monitoring the camera, DN2 has not been observed to be breathing for several hours.
We do know that DN1 is active, alert and was playing with sticks and nest fluff. Mom North is standing, flapping her wings, and looking like she may be recovering a bit. Dad has been observed off on the distant perch branch.
RRP is continuing to monitor the situation, and it is now dark in Decorah. RRP is also networking with other agencies and we will keep you posted as we keep a close eye on The North’s. We will also do our best to try and figure out the cause of today’s events to the best of our ability with other experts.
We have no other information at this time, and would are not able to address any other questions except for what is stated in this update. We sincerely appreciate all your kind thoughts, positive energy and prayers for the North Nest family."

A few updates have been posted on RRP's Facebook page:

May 26, 2016 10:43am EDT
"Decorah North Mom is alive and has flown from the nest. Dad was seen earlier on the yonder perch branch, and DN1 is alive and has been exhibiting normal behavior. We are discussing the next steps and will keep everyone posted. I don't have time to round up photos now, but we will post some as soon as we can."

"Contrary to some reports on other pages or sites, DN1 has not been fed DN2. The body of DN2 remains in the nest right now. As the cap below shows, we have a parent perched nearby on watch, and DN1 is fine as of this posting at 1:40pm CT."

Sherri Elliott -- "I posted this comment in the thread below, but many of you may have missed it and are asking the same questions:

Many of you continue to ask if the camera can be turned back on; if DN2's body can be removed; and the current condition of the eagles.

Mom, Dad and DN1 are doing fine and we have given you observations of them all alive, healthy and exhibiting normal behavior.

The camera will be turned back on when RRP decides to do so. While many of you may want to see DN1 in the nest, and parents coming in and out, there are others who would be very disturbed at seeing DN2 continue to lay in the nest. RRP is cognizant of all viewers feelings and has opted to turn off the live feed and give you periodic updates.

RRP continues to work with federal and state agencies to discuss options and develop possible plans as well as being permitted to retrieve a deceased eaglet in an active eagle nest. It is a complicated process, as well as a very difficult logistical situation. The nest is not easily accessed and the terrain below the tree is on a slope making a bucket truck impossible. Any planning has to be done with the governing bodies that oversee the protection of bald eagles, as well as careful planning as to potential hazards and risks to the nesting eagles and the climbers. I would please ask all of you to trust that RRP is doing everything possible to do what can be done. We are all hoping for the best outcome."

They have also posted a current screen capture of the nest (the live feed is still off at this time). DN2 is not visible in the photo, so it is safe to view.

Another update:

"7:13pm CT - Decorah North Nest Update!
Amy reports that it has been an all day process, but permits were signed off on, a climbing team assembled, and DN2 was retrieved from the nest via a pole from 20 ft below. DN2 will be taken for a necropsy tomorrow with our veterinarian who works with SOAR.
Dad has been seen, Mom has been flying and is now in the nest with DN1, and while we don't know if it has eaten, it is robust and active, and there is food in the nest. Amy has photos and will write a blog that will post later tonight or tomorrow.
The camera will remain off for live viewing for a bit longer, but I do not have a timetable for when we will be live streaming again. In the meantime, thank you all for the incredible strength and support you have shown to RRP and hopefully we will have some answers soon as to cause of death of DN2."

Amy from RPP wrote a blog post. I'm so glad they retrieved DN2's body and I sure hope they find out what the poison was.

I edited this. I did watch the video

INTERVENTION AT DNN
Posted by Amy Ries
http://raptorresource.blogspot.com/2016 ... -nest.html

Decorah North Nest female eagle, Mom North, brought some tainted prey into the nest on the afternoon of May 25th. She fed DN2, who promptly died, and ate some herself. Until we shut the cams off, horrified watchers saw a very sick Mom North struggling in the nest.

After she flew off the nest on the morning of May 26th, we knew we needed to make a plan to recover DN2. We wanted to autopsy the eaglet to determine the poisoning agent and prevent Mom from feeding DN2 to DN1 and killing DN1 as well.

Amy explained to US Fish and Wildlife and Iowa DNR we would recover DN2 without going into the nest and take the body to Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine for autopsy. They approved and we were able to recover DN2's body.

Poisoning is not nature taking its course and all parties agreed that intervention was appropriate and allowable in this case.

We are continuing to monitor the nest remotely, but the camera will remain off for live viewing for the time being. Mom has been in the nest with DN1, who has been fed and looks like a healthy, alert young eagle.

We've had some requests for the last video shot from the nest before we turned it off. This video shows an ill Mom in the nest, as well as DN2. If you find it disturbing to watch, please do not follow the link. I witnessed the event and found it very disturbing:

Necropsy and Toxicology is back on DN2....confirming what everybody suspected.. :girlsad3:

Posted on their FB page:

We received a final autopsy report on DN2. The eaglet died as a result of Methomyl toxicity, although caffeine was also present. An analysis of DN2’s liver ruled out lead and mercury as the cause of death. It did not include information on the sex of the eaglet.

We encourage everyone to read the full post for more information and resources, but DN2's death was most likely caused by an off-label use of Golden Malrin, Scatterbait, or Stimukil, flybaits that contain 1% methomyl. This article contains more information about it: http://www.sciencemag.org/…/regulators-move-limit-wildlife-…

    Please continue reading below!

    What is Methomyl?
Methomyl is a broad spectrum insecticide introduced in 1966 to kill a variety of insect pests. It is registered for commercial/professional use on sites including field, vegetable, and orchard crops; sod farms; livestock quarters; commercial premises; and refuse containers. It is toxic enough that products containing more than 1% Methomyl are not available for homeowner or non-professional application.

How were DN2 and Mom North poisoned?
While we don’t know for sure, Methomyl is sometimes used off-label to kill wildlife species that become problematic. 1% Methomyl products including Golden Malrin, Lurectron Scatterbait, and Stimukil are placed in sweet solutions, including caffeinated colas, to poison animals like raccoon that some consider pests and can cause damage to buildings and farm animals. Given the presence of both Methomyl and caffeine, it seems likely that Mom North found a Methomyl-poisoned dying or dead mammal and brought it to the nest to eat. It wouldn’t have taken much to kill DN2 or Mom North, since Methomyl is highly toxic. Based on what we observed, Mom North was able to metabolize and recover from what she ate, but DN2 was not. While it is possible that the poisoning was the unintended consequence of a legal use of Methomyl, the caffeine suggests it was not.

For more about the problems of baiting wildlife with Methomyl, follow this link: http://www.sciencemag.org/…/regulators-move-limit-wildlife-…

    Is this legal?
It is not. While Methomyl and many other pesticides and insecticides are legal when used in a manner consistent with labeling, it is illegal to go off-label and use them in a manner for which they are not intended. Fly bait is legal when used according to direction and illegal used in any other way. There may be state and federal penalties for people caught misusing it, depending on state and federal law, and what species are killed.

What are you going to do about it?
We have already reported the incident to the Iowa State DNR and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and will report it to the EPA and the manufacturer of the most likely culprit, Golden Malrin. We will also use our RRP website, Facebook and Twitter audience to help spread the message about misuse of Methomyl and let people know that they can petition their states to reclassify Methomyl fly baits as restricted products should they choose to do so. We would love to say that this was an isolated incident, but a quick search for “golden malrin raccoon” reveals just how widespread the practice is. Google it and join the discussion!

Do you know who did it?
No. There is a lot of variability in eagle home ranges. While immediate nest defense/core territories tend to occur within 100 square meters or so of the nest, hunting territories vary considerably. One study documented bald eagle summer home ranges that varied from 3 square miles to 18 square miles depending on age, nesting status, and available resources. But other studies have found even wider ranges in nesting bald eagles, including 37 square miles for a pair in Louisiana. The landowners in the immediate vicinity of the nest have expressed their commitment to conservation. With bald eagles searching and scavenging for food over a large area, there is no way to know exactly where it came from. We are not an enforcement agency, but we have reported what we know to enforcement agencies.

We don’t believe that anyone meant DN2 or Mom North any harm. But people need to know that off-label poisoning kills unintended targets and can have serious legal consequences. This may also be a good day to check garages, basements, and storage sheds to see what noxious and toxic herbicides, rodenticides, and insecticides are on hand that have tragic consequences for wildlife, pets, and humans. Want something to replace those highly toxic chemicals? Check out the Bio-Integral Resource Center (http://www.birc.org/) and their list of least-toxic pest control products: http://www.birc.org/2012Directory.pdf. Even if you can't go completely toxin-free, you can reduce harmful consequences by using products correctly and choosing the least toxic options. Please help by sharing and spreading the word to prevent the unintentional poisoning of bald eagles and other animals!

Note that Methomyl is toxic enough that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Methomyl manufacturers have agreed to limit use on certain crops to reduce risks to drinking water: http://bit.ly/29yhNcY. EPA and manufacturers have also reached an agreement to stop making and selling some fly bait products and to add information to the label that clarifies the approved uses. EPA believes that these changes will reduce the illegal use of methomyl fly bait products which can kill wildlife, an issue that was reported to EPA by a number of states.

Are you an academic studying this issue? Please contact us by emailing amy@raptorresource.org.

Videos! We have Mom and Dad North back at home, a very brief nest invasion by what appears to be a hawk, and synchronized preening in Decorah! Thanks as always to the camera operators and video makers for sharing these special moments with us! We hope you enjoy them.

Intruder and Both Parents at DNN: https://youtu.be/FLfL0g6jV_E
The year at Decorah North started with a bang this afternoon when Mom arrived with a hawk in tow! You might want to slow down the video to see it, since the encounter is only about four seconds long. The hawk follows Mom in, but (after dropping a fish at 2 seconds) she quickly rousts it from the nest. Dad flies in across the field at 5 seconds and it is hard for this human watcher not to think she was giving him a look!
