First Egg at Delta 2?, or potato? LOL The morning mystery at the Delta 2 nest

March 8, 2013 — bald eagle, birds, Delta2, Eagle, eaglecam, egg, Hancock Wildlife Foundation, HWF, nature, raptors

From what I can see and gather from what is being said, it looked like maybe there was an egg laid last night, but the camera is currently having some issues and so it is choppy and hard to get a good look. This morning everyone waited with baited breath to see if there was an egg, but we still can’t tell for certain! Primarily there is some doubt because the behavior of the parents just doesn’t seem to match incubating behavior in total, even taking into account possible delayed incubation. First, they both left the nest last night right after the possible laying event, and then today, there is alternating incubation like behavior and then no one on the nest. And what can be seen on cam sure LOOKs like an egg and even maybe a parent rolling it, but the bowl is so deep, no one can tell for sure. The chatters at the cam are having some fun determining if they have an egg or not. I guess in time it will clear itself up. In the time I have been writing this post (about 5 min, we have had one parent in incubation position, then popping right back up to standing, then two parents on the nest, neither on the “egg” and now both have left. You can visit the nest cam here, if you want to help solve the mystery!

JudyB noted that they're pretty sure egg #1 was laid on the 7th ... with #2 being laid today, of course. :)

Well I don't know the details I'll post when I find out, but it seems mom at Delta #2 has an injured foot.
Got to go to work right now so if anyone can find anything out please post. I'll go to Hancock tonight and see what I can find.

Well, I went and played catch-up on the Hancock forum..they still don't know what happened to Mom but it appears she is putting NO weight on that leg...At least Lucy and the Berry Mom could put some weight on that leg/foot...but, not this mom..there's another video of her landing in the nest..

David was alerted and went out there..He dropped some "road-kill" in the field for her..in hopes of luring her in so that he could get a better look. There are also people on the ground watching...(periodically)..

just an aside...I am not a member of Hancock..but, I almost had to register. The cam operator (dubbed the zoomer) was panning and found a gorgeous, 2013 hatch year Pefa in a tree. They got lots of pics...but, what was so funny was that nobody knew what it was...I actually started laughing out loud..the general consensus was that it must be a juvie RTH..hahahahahahaha...(I think this all took place Sunday afternoon)...anyway, it was finally ID (By David...and 1 other person) as a PeFa!!

Update on Delta 2 nest and Mom...

They are going to try and trap her. Posted on their FB page yesterday:

David Hancock's report from his visit to the Delta 2 nest today:

Hi all: an update on Delta2 Ma -- a beautiful bird with a broken leg!

Kathy and I visited the nest this AM and Ma seemed to be sitting on the high tension pole to the West. Apparently she spent the night in the nest resting after I last saw her sitting very uncomfortably on a branch above the nest earlier in the evening.

The objective is to lure MA to the ground for food and then trap her.

Kathy had some fine salmon offering that she put out by the road-killed opossum I had placed out on Sunday. We circuited the territory but did not confirm Ma's position so decided on only leaving food near the nest which is protected by the gated yard. While Pa arrived at the nest tree after a couple of hours Ma did not show up. Time will tell.

I spoke with Bev Day of OWL about the trapping and she suggested that we might get a bow net from Maj at Mountainaire rescue. Within a couple of hours Pacific Coastal Airlines had brought it to Vancouver where I picked it up. Tomorrow I will test out the equipment and arrange with Bev the trapping -- depending of course on Ma's appearance at the bait. We wait and hope.

More salmon will go out in the morning and if I find another road kill that will go out also. As soon as we see Ma feeding on the bait we will incorporate the bow net.

The bait site is visible from the East cam (not from the west cam) and if Ma comes to our offering I hope to be called on my cell by the mods.

Background: Kathy and a few others have been watching Delta2 for some years and this last couple of weeks our resident pair have apparently been challenged by new birds seeking a territory. Perhaps the broken leg came from an aggressive encounter. I thought it might have come from trying to dislodge a tree branch that won the battle. However, with others seeing the repeated territorial challenges the break could well have come from such an encounter.

Bev and I will discuss tomorrow the developing plans and possible corrective actions if the bird is caught.

Thanks.

David Hancock
