Euthanasia is hard to accept, but having gone through this with my horse just recently, I know it was the right thing. He died with me by his side, looking into his eyes telling him it was alright.

That being said, I was surprised it was on a Facebook page.

I'm so sorry, gigi. I believe animals enter the spirit world after they pass from the physical world. Still -- it's hard for us to bear the loss. :sorrow:

here are some more heroes....

The First Baby Squirrels of 2013 at Wildcare

Without fur, and with eyes still tightly sealed shut, these are very young squirrels, probably about a week old. All three seemed warm and well-fed, so we knew Mom had been looking after them.

In this situation, our first thought is to try to get them back into her care. At WildCare, we successfully raise hundreds of orphaned wild babies every year, but all of these babies would be better off in their mothers' care. And wild moms desperately want them back, too!

Upon intake at WildCare, each baby was weighed and one foot was marked with a color to help distinguish them from each other.

We have baby squirrels come into Lindsay Wildlife hospital, too. If they can't be renested, they are picked up by the Squirrel Team, which gives them home care. The handlers make sure the squirrels (or any other animals they treat) are not habituated to the handlers.

This is just tragic. I remember in the sixties when Lake Erie was so polluted with man created chemicals that caused major die offs. I hope the scientists can figure out a way to combat this problem and get the lakes back to being healthy..

A tiny baby Jackrabbit is nestled in a patch of grass. His brown speckled coat blends into the bright green grass of spring, and he keeps his little ears pinned down to his shoulders to be as inconspicuous as possible. He sits completely still, just as his mother taught him.
But mom has left her baby near a construction site. Not actually in the middle of the activity, but close enough that workmen strolling the perimeter come across him.
The little hare is very young, and he's alone, so the workmen come to the logical conclusion that he is orphaned. He ends up at WildCare.

But was he really orphaned? Jackrabbits like this little baby are born precocial, meaning their eyes are open and they are able to hop almost immediately after they are born. Because of this, Jackrabbit mothers are able to leave their young alone for several hours while they forage, which means a compassionate human may find the little one, not see an adult hare, and assume he is orphaned.

It is easy for the humans to think that they have been orphaned. It happens all the time with our baby birds that are on the ground as they are learning to fly. We always try to tell the rescuers to watch for a bit. Nine times out of ten the parent returns..

That being said, I would rather end up with the "orphan" if there is any question.
