Wounded and partially paralyzed, a wolf named Navarre was rescued from the icy waters of the Limentra by the amazing people from the Monte Adone Centre for Conservation and Research of Exotic and Wild Fauna. After receiving treatment, rehabilitation, and a lot of love, Navarre is on the road to recovery.

I am so pleased that this topic is popular :ohyes:

Release of Golden Eagle Newspaper Article

I knew something was up last Thursday when I arrived for my shift at the hospital. Most of the staff were gone -- they were releasing a three year old Golden Eagle. He was found in October dragging his wing in a shopping center. He was probably hit by a car. Dr. Shannon Riggs, out chief veterinarian, surgically pinned three fractured bone wings.

I remember him in his large aviary, standing on a low perch. My task (with another volunteer) was to give him clean water and deliver 4 or 5 euthanized dead mice. He slightly raised his wings when I entered and kept an eye on me the whole time.

He was banded and successfully released. As stated in the article, such a golden eagle release is rate in this area because those brought to the animal hospital usually have been injured at the Altamont wind farm and never fully recover…..

I also uploaded a copy of the video to YouTube, just in case the video disappears from the web site:

Here's another video of the Golden Eagle's release. The volunteer with the camera did an excellent job of filming the eagle's long flight after release. Bravo!

Here is a little great horned owl nestling we rescued Sunday. He was found in the middle of the road and 2 passersby blocked it with their vehicles until Chris got there. We did find the nest being guarded by Mama, but it was too high to return him without a bucket truck, so he remains in our custody until he can be released. We do have an adult GHO that we may be able to use as a surrogate. I snapped this photo of him displaying a fierce warning stance right after feeding him 3 mice. Talk about no appreciation!

We would really like to get him back to Mama, but not sure how we can accomplish that. We need to befriend a tree service.

Both wildlife hospitals I'm associated with have re-nested owls. It isn't easy! A ladder certainly helps. There may be a tree service that would volunteer its time, but the person would need to know something about owls to attempt this action.

It was just a thought. The nest cavity was way way up there and too dangerous for just a ladder. I am sure he will stay with us.

When you passes his flight test, you can release him next to the nest tree. :)

Not often you get a falcon as an education animal. Should be fun for the Wildlife Center!

Here's a little video that is sure to make you smile:

Rehabilitated Little Blue Penguins released at Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand on November 22, 2011 after being being cleaned of oil at the Rena spill. The 49 Penguins were oiled in the spill in October from the grounded cargo ship Rena. The birds were set free after rescue and rehabilitation by emergency response teams, including International Bird Rescue, organized through Massey University's New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre.

A Maori blessing preceded the release.

This video was shown at International Bird Rescue's Fortieth Anniversary Friday night, April 20.

I remembered when the oil spill occurred and they needed tiny little sweaters to keep them warm. By the time I found about it, they had enough. This video was too sweet!

These penguins don't molt like most birds. They have a catastrophic molt once a year, during which time they lose all of their feathers at once. Of course, new ones are growing in underneath the feathers they are losing.

An oil spill leaves a bird's feathers compromised: the feathers lose their insulating quality. This is not only bad during colder weather, it's also bad in hot weather: the birds can't properly thermoregulate. Even on hot days, going into the cool water quickly causes them to become chilled. And that means death will soon follow. I don't know specifically about penguins, but the seabirds and waterfowl have an average internal body temperature of around 103.

I wasn't at this spill, so I don't know whether or not these birds were going through a molt at the beginning of the spill.
