Pigeons who have been cared for by people can become very friendly. Midge has obviously found a home!

And here's our Raven, who went to Cascades Raptor Center on Saturday. He loves the sun on his shoulders.

I think he's very happy in his new home.

This is a picture that was emailed to me by Louise Shimmel, who established and now runs CRC (along with a board of directors). I hope to go there early September and again in November. In November, I will bring a sweet potato. On a cold day, he appreciates a warm, baked sweet potato.

Jenny and Shirley were Elephants at the same circus when Jenny was a calf, and Shirley was in her twenties. The two lived one winter together, but then were separated twenty-two years ago. It's very rare for elephants to display this kind of emotion in captivity, and it's probably the first time such a thing has been documented on film. Be sure to note them “hugging” near the end of this video. Elephants Reunited After 20 Years
I also visited Allison Argo's website ArgoFilms. She does amazing work.

Thanks ever so much for posting that link. I saw the PBS special -- it was great to see these special moments again.

gigi, that was amazing, touching, and bittersweet to watch. Tears are running down my face. Thank goodness Shirley is finally without chains.

I've recently learned what a terribly invasive species the House Sparrow is, and I am ashamed to admit that some of my backyard practices have "facilitated" this population. :tantrum2: No more. I'm trying to read and educate myself about types of feed as well as housing that will encourage native birds to return, but would love to hear from some of you knowledgeable people about your experiences of what REALLY works and what doesn't. Thanks.

I am not sure anything works at reducing their population Susan. The house sparrow likes to nest near buildings, hence the name, so removing habitat and nesting opportunities are your only hope. Don't get your hopes up since this bird is very resourceful and I don't think there is a seed that the house sparrow does not like. My humble opinion is that they are just fine at my feeders. I put out enough for everyone including the squirrels and occasional raccoon and possum.

Anyone who sees this video will understand with his heart why we should protect wildlife and wildlife territories:

Thanks you beans. That was so touching.
I am doubly blessed. These pictures were taken during my hike at the bottom of the Grand Canyon last year. For a short time "Buck" and his lady walked along side us and eventually crossed the trail and disappeared. The next morning as we hiked out, we came upon another family and even saw the fawn nursing. It was beautiful.
