Weather permitting, I am planning an eagle watching trip to this area. Will report if I am able to go and if I see eagles. I don't have a great camera, but if I get any decent pics, I will post them.

On the eagle notes, I did see one yesterday morning flying not too high above me as I took Roy for pet therapy at the nursing home. Always special.

Let me say this: My eagle scouting trip to the Davenport area was fantastic. My friend lives in Bettendorf which is part of the Quad Cities of Bettendorf and Davenport on the Iowa side and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois. New geography fact I learned: At that point in the Mississippi, the river actually runs east and west!

I finally went through my pictures and wanted to show the Davenport nest from about 100 yards away. It is located in a fenced area [thankfully] so these pics were shot through the chainlinks!

24x Zoom. I envisioned the nest to be located in a more stable place in the tree, not precariously at the top of the tree. Reminded me of the nursery rhyme. "When the wind blows, the cradle will rock..."

Cropped and enlarged to show camera position.

Finally a picture of "some" eagles in the vicinity. I have no idea if these are the ones that claim the Davenport Alcoa nest. There were hundreds of eagles so just an example of roosting in the nearby area.

Wow Gigi-sounds like a terrific bird/eagle trip.

I am with you about the nest being in a precarious setting.

Fantastic pics, gigi...I didn't know the cam was that far away....and you're right, that nest sure looks to be just "perched" up there...It looks rather secure via the nest cam, though...I sure hope so!!!

:6snowflake: Wow, Gigi! Great pictures! That nest does look rather 'rocky!'

Meanwhile, someone has been on the nest today - A LOT! Looks like mom? Earlier, h/she was sitting for quite some time, looking around. What looked like juvie (or something) came nearby and the sitting eagle chased it away. Shortly after that, someone was back - having a snack.
(sorry - vague about timing)
3:00 - 3:15pm (approx. eastern time) - someone has been back and just now (3:28) - whoever is sitting just squawked a warning (?) and looked around.

Added: 3:36pm (eastern) Stepped away from PC for a few minutes - and nest is empty.

(Fingers crossed for a good season this year - last year was a stinker...)

I don't see anyone there now either!
Per their chat:

Are You Ready For An Egg?
In the next few days to a week I would expect to see an egg or two produced in our nest. It was great to see Liberty & Justice bring fresh nesting material in a few days ago and there is plenty more close by if they decide they need more. We have all seen the rehearsal "sitting" in the nest. The only thing left to do is actually lay an egg and then wait for the hatch in March. I know we are all hoping for a successful hatch this year!

Looks like mom is on the nest and dad is on guard - blocking the cam, or I should say looking right into the cam! Maybe today is the day???

I'm not sure who is in the pictures I posted above... chat indicated that dad was in the nest and mom was on guard! (Chat also said if someone threw a white rock in the nest, dad would brood it! Anxious for eggies! Wind is blowing - I think I saw a brood patch on the eagle who is perched.)

Well I am praying these 2 will have a good year. So far there doesn't seem to be as many strays around this year.

Now the nest is empty. No eagles seen on either cam.
(They're late laying this year - maybe the trouble last year was from E's passing through... and they decided to wait this year. :girlcrazy: Could I be reading a bit too much into this ??? :teehee: )
