Update 7pm 25th November.

SE21 is doing ok. Having dressing changed on wounds three times per day. She is also taking food. We hope to have another update in next day or so.

For those who didn't see the picture we included in our newsletter yesterday, this picture shows SE21's wounded wing from being trapped in the tree fork (taken during x-ray).

I just happened to see it on FB and I had been following her progress, so fingers crossed indeed. :loveheart:

Good on this team as they do not interfer with the nests in general. But how could you not try in this case

I finally found the pictures on FB - Good Lord... and frounce on top of everything. You're right about that: "a reason for all things."

update DEC 1

1st December, 2018 - Summer is here!

It's been 8 days since SE21 had her accident. We asked her carers for an update on how she is progressing. They said:

SE21 is still receiving regular treatment along with light physio three times per day.

We're happy to report, she is eating a variety of food including mullet and kangaroo. SE21 has daily excursions to a soft netted enclosure, outside. This is important to reduce imprinting, provide weathering (we've all seen SE21 doing her rain dance) and for her general well-being.

SE21's injured wing is still extremely sensitive, raw and requires intensive management working towards her release. Presently there is not a lot of movement in her injured wing; this is likely due to severity of the muscle damage and bruising.

Veterinary medication is being administered for the Trichomoniasis so her vocals are still raspy.

Next week, SE21 is scheduled to visit with Veterinary Specialists to ensure the Trichomoniasis is under control and the wing is recovering correctly.

Meanwhile Dad (left) and Lady (right) are spending the night on branches above and behind the nest. We look forward to seeing "our" Sea-Eagle familiy reunited.

SE21 UPDATE - 9th December, 2018

SE21 is doing well. She is now eating a variety of food, including bream, kangaroo and mullet. No specific information on the Trichomoniasis - regarding whether treatment is ongoing or complete.

There is a check-up with the vet on Tuesday, after which we hope to have some more details of her progress. Currently she is able to move about her enclosure, is moving her injured wing but does not yet have full use. This is in line with the expectation following initial assessment by the vet

SE21 UPDATE - 12th December, 2018

GOOD NEWS - from the vet yesterday, despite her wing still drooping, SE21 has had some small test flights and is learning to fly again.

The soft tissue injury and skin are healing well and will need at least another 2-4 weeks for the wounds to heal.

The Trichomonas infection affecting her mouth, tongue and pharynx also appears to be healing with the mouth and tongue clear of lesions.

The vet is quietly optimistic that SE21 should be suitable for release into the wild.

SE21 UPDATE 15th December, 2018

With a HUGE thank you to her carers, we have a picture of SE21.
As we have mentioned previously, rehab facilities typically do not release pictures of their patients,
so think of this as an unexpected, gratefully received, exception.

These pictures show SE21 in her pen, her wing is still drooping slightly but it's getting better.
The other is the wound area following debridement treatment (to remove dead skin etc).

Hello Mr/Ms Visitor! Are you a returning member of "our" Sea-Eagle family?
Our visitor flew straight to the nest. Familiar?
Perhaps SE16, who fledged in 2015 (would be 3.5 yrs now).
In saying that, we'll probably never know!

UPDATE on SE21 from Peg at Higher Ground Raptors.

SE21 has now moved to HGR to continue her rehabilitation

Image

"Higher Ground Raptors

I feel like royalty has arrived here at HGRC!

Those of you who know SE21 understand how this lovely young Sea eagle has been followed by people around the world from the day she was laid.

Thanks to the fantastic work by the good folk at Sydney Sea-EagleCAM, hundreds of us follow in real time the lives of two White-bellied Sea Eagles who live and breed in the semi urban environment of Sydney Olympic Park.

Their nesting and breeding provides endless super interesting hours of the best live reality show around, and when we see that first pip it is spine tingling to witness one of these magnificent birds begin their life journey.

As a raptor rehabilitator the information they provide me with is priceless.

This year the surviving chick, known as SE21, fledged some weeks back. Thanks to the cameras it became apparent that she was infected with a protozoan parasite called trichomoniasis, commonly seen in pigeons and doves which are then fed to the young. This weakened her and one-day a few weeks back the ever vigilant folk at Sea-EagleCAM spotted her caught in a tree by one wing.

She was rescued by the awesome team at Feathered Friends in Sydney in a night time rescue mission, led by Bird Life’s Judy Harrington who provided authorised escort and supervision into the dark forest area.
Left alone she would have died.

Ravi from Feathered Friends, and his team, began her immediate rehabilitation under veterinary instruction, and continued their great work until she was deemed well enough to move onto here for her next stage of recovery.

She has settled in nicely, is eating well and appears content. She has overcome a lot, but that said there is still a long way to go in her rehabilitation process. By the very nature of being a wild bird in care it is always impossible to predict the future.

I took a short video of her so you could all see her on the last day of 2018.( see video in FB)

Whilst she does have a large fan club, she has joined many other raptors I have in rehabilitation at the moment, and time simply is in short supply. She will receive exactly the same respect, attention, care and love as my other charges. Unfortunately there is no time to be her fan club manager though!!

I would really appreciate if everyone could be patient with my updates on her, and just except those as the only way I can keep you all up to speed on her progress. Any questions will be answered in the following post.

You all know how much I love teamwork, learning and sharing knowledge, but this has, and will continue to be, the ultimate collaborative process between all organisations involved. I am super pleased how well it has all played out from our human perspective! Great contacts and new friends have been acquired as a bonus.

Happy New Year everyone, especially to all the birds in care, their carers and those who care
!"

Latest update January 27th, 2019.

Fantastic news about SE21 shared from Higher Ground Raptors facebook page!

Hullo everyone...
What better way to be celebrating for me what is an acknowledgement of our beautiful country and all that inhabit it, than by caring for seven magnificent Australian eagles with the aim of being able to send them back out into the wilderness where they belong again.

Update on SE21 - 26/1/2019

SE21 has had a very big couple of weeks, I have been giving her structured exercise as previously described and finally it was time to allow her into the Peter Spitzer free flight, where she has been for three days.

So she has now gone up a step from being encouraged to fly 16m lengths and land on a rotating perch, which encourages gentleshort bursts of wing lift, In total Essie and I built up to 160m twice each day and her wing was not showing signs of exacerbated droop, so it was time to move to the next stage.

Her wound is still irritating (me not Essie - I see no signs of it annoying her either when I look physically or on the CCTV), but it is still somewhat scaly and red. A scab like that takes a long while to resolve unfortunately. My hope is that perhaps extending her wings with more air and sunshine and better bathing opportunities will help. It is not a problem - it just has to be monitored so it doesn't become one.

Now is a really critical time for her as I do not want her to do too much, but I need her to start to have the confidence to fly a little. She hasn't flown for so long that for many reasons prolonged flight of over 50 metres would not be advantageous at this point.

After an initial burst of energy when she first went in and straight up to a 5m perch, she has now settled and is perching 3m up and managing little flights without distress.

A comparison can be made to us in that if we had had none, then limited normal movement for over two months then we would not be either able to do, or be encouraged by our doctors to do, too much physical work at this point.

This is such a critical time for her. She has been accepted very nicely by her fellow temporary residents, is eating well her wing droop is no worse afer the increase in exercise, and she is able to correct it nicely, and she is pacing herself beautifully.

She remains fiesty and strong and is doing all I want her to do perfectly.

Despite all this good news it must always be remembered that she is still a wild bird in care, and she still has a road to be travelled, but so far so good.

I am working away on my Fellowship report so I am able to monitor her constantly on the CCTV, and as I type now all is well and I am happy with her progress.

Late update - she has just wandered over to one of the big drinking pools and is having a gentle chat with one of the adult WBSE's in care.

So hard to concentrate on my report!
