Thanks bonbon...

whatever was going on, seems to have resolved itself...my computer is a "senior citizen", so most of the time its my issue...except I wasn't having any problems with other cams...Oh well, another one of those internet mysteries..

anyway, somebody on top of the box.

I opened the cam at 8 pm to find Durand on the ledge by the ledge cam. She is still there....snoozing, preening, and just hanging out.

8:22 pm - Durand showing off her silver band.

:flirty: Great captures. Hard to believe that Aries did a 4 minute bonding session! Wow. Maybe he couldn't quite get over his lady's shabby appearance....lol. :sunconfused: She really is molting.

:teehee: Bev.
Nature got it right with the birds....to molt after a hectic season of bonding, nesting, defending, and raising a bunch of rambunctious kids. Perfect timing!

WOW!!!

what a shame. but it is good all are working together responsibly to provide another site.

Gord has had to do this a few times in downtown Edmonton. He was lucky and our peregrines nested where he put the box. and then one colder spring E4 decided not to use box but used the ledges in Bell tower, as it was warmer. The side she went to , was not great ,so again, Gord put a nice box on other side( we called it the Condo) and it took some convincing by a new male to get her to go there but she did.
But this is nto ideal for our young ones.

and then of course, being a peregirne , sent she was met with a challenge at her site, she hi -tailed it back to the older bundling, which was under renovations. They were very cooperative and let her stay. She made her scrape from pigeon poop and successfully hatched and fledged 3 young.

from then on she and now a new female has been at Bell.

so I guess what i am saying, anything can happen, and let us hope for the best. :15heartbeat:

:nervous: Oh dear! Thanks Sally. I hope Durand and Aries choose that alternate nest box on the Riffe Tower. I recall when it was put it up. I was so worried the birds would relocate there with no cam access. Spark was still around and the pair decided to stay put. If I recall, the box was placed on a ledge facing the Rhodes Tower where the birds often ate. Is that facing east? Does the current box face south? Does that matter? We all know how Durand has sun issues in the spring. :1sum: Then again, she likes the sun in the winter. :smilehat: I wonder if anyone has ever seen them investigating that box. It's been there at least 2 yrs. Oh my. This was the 1st cam I ever watched after reading about peregrine falcon chicks banded at a nest on a hospital ledge across from my office. I then researched peregrines and the Columbus site came up in my search. I was always a birder and nature lover, but the Columbus cam opened up an entire birding world for me, both online and at home. I would be devastated if this pair decided to go elsewhere and I couldn't watch them. Hopefully, since Durand feels safe directing her fledglings to the Riffe Tower, she will decide to nest there, too. Hoping for the best.

Here's an old blog post with info and pics about the alternate nest box. It was put up in Jan 2015 and faces northeast.

:flirty: I really, really hope that this will work out for the falcons and us, but know as the falcons are not in on this ... they will always do what is normal for them. I think of Warsaw PKIN this past season and while Franek and Giga had a successful season ... we could only follow through photos and comments of followers on the ground that reports came weeks or months apart ... when they could actually capture the events.

:thanku

I know they will do everything they can to make sure Durand and Aries are safe..tho' they aren't gonna be very happy about it!! Hopefully they'll take to the new box and "like" it!! For all we know, they've already visited it!!

We all know falcons pretty well, if you build it, they don't always come!! Let's hope they don't fall into that category!!

..and speaking of visits..Durand stopped by several times yesterday..

Love the pics. Durand is really re-establishing her bond with this box. Sigh! She will not be happy when it's gone, :suntalk: but the timing couldn't be better. She'll have lots of time to establish a new home.

I hope there's a lip across the entrance to the Riffe box. Durand moves her eggs and seeing the ramp on that box, I have visions of the eggs rolling out, down the ramp, and onto the deck. I'm also not keen on the gap between the corner of the building and the back of the nest box. I wouldn't want anyone going down there behind the box (like Aries) and and not be able to get up and out. I know they'll do all they can to ensure safety and I'm glad they're putting such effort into accommodating this pair. In looking at the map, the Rhodes Tower ledge faces south-southeast. The Riffe Tower observation deck is facing north-northeast. It will be cooler and more shady at the Riffe.

Durand is in the box and one of the kids is on the next ledge. The kid thought about landing on the ledge, saw Durand, fluttered a bit, then made its way to the next ledge. Not sure why it didn't land unless seeing Durand made it think twice, LOL
