Saturday May 6 - Union County

I don't see posts on the cam site about losing an egg. I never saw the eggs today to see if there were 4 remaining. Both parents are very tight on the eggs. No hatch appeared imminent, but I am not losing hope for Mom's eggs despite what the site says. I am not sure how they are calculating these hatch dates for Cadence's eggs. I figured around May 25, not May 30. Incubation started immediately with her 1st egg, not her 3rd. Mom's eggs were due on or after May 5th based on when we lost Mom and Dad started full incubation. I suppose we will find out soon enough.

10:34 am - Cadence just got up...there are STILL 5 eggs, but not sure if the light colored egg is broken. The edge on the top right looks jagged. Not sure. That would be one of Mom's eggs. Dad just came in to incubate. Very tight on the eggs. Not restless at all.

Yes, it's Cadence, a 2015 Rochester hatch. I understand she is the only surviving offspring from that year.

Another switch. Dad out and Cadence in. I got another pic of the eggs. They all look fine. I think what looked like a jagged edge before was just image distortion.

I really think moms egg s would hatch quite close to cadences, as they were not in full incubation.

I really want at least one of moms to hatch.

:girlyes: Yup...I agree Bev. Dad was on and off the eggs for periods at a time even though he was trying very hard to incubate continuously. It really was an impossibility and those eggs would arrest their development during those absences while he hunted and courted Cadence. Temps were well above freezing at that time. I too am hoping for at least one egg from Mom to hatch. If any of them hatch before May 25, we'll know it's hers.

Jersey City:

I haven't checked the cam for a long time. So GLAD to see the birds finally get down to business in the box. I'll be down on the weekends when there are hatchlings and some action to be seen from the ground. I can get in 55 Water St and JC in one trip.

Will visit Cadence in Elizabeth as well. I have photos of her as a fledgling.

Nothing new. Both parents still tight on the eggs. Looks like someone found or brought in what looks like old spine remnants from prey.

12:48 - Cadence with a look at all 5 eggs.
Image

3:40 pm - Dad with unidentified object - prey remnants?

5:17 pm - Mom or Dad? I don't know these two, but someone hunkered down on the eggs. Rainy day.

Nestbox news:
May 18

We're in the home stretch here in Jersey City! Hatching will begin next week. With abnormally warm weather, you will see how 41/AX thermoregulates her body temperature by panting. Birds do not have sweat glands, so they must pant to release excess heat from their bodies. They can drink fresh water, but most of their water comes directly from eating fresh prey. So, during hot days they typically tend to lay low during the hottest part of the day and forage in the early morning and dusk hours of the day.

(Not able to see cams - only spinning circles...)

4:27pm Just saw Dad roll the eggs, bless his little heart, he's having a heck of time getting them all back under him!

Mom on eggs (not brooding tightly, standing above them); it's hot - she's panting.

Jersey City

Lots of panting by parent on eggs...
