So I log on to the cam and see black!! OH, NO - cam down NOW? Then I checked the wide view. Then our Noisy Nelly did a few two steps and showed her bling.

Looks like someone dyed a pigeon based on the primary feather color. Could be an escaped Amazon or large conure. It's not one of my birds, however. |

Or it could be a Common Parakeet:  In many countries these birds have done quite well in the wild, all descending from escapees. Have seen some in a few Dutch Peregrine Falcon boxes as well. |

You're absolutely right, Dutch Eagle Fan. They are Monk Parakeets, also called Quaker Parrots. They are quite prevalent in the area. They have been around for decades. They believe it started when some escaped at JFK International Airport in Queens during shipment and they reproduced. They became successful, despite the cold NY/NJ winters. There are colonies in Brooklyn NY and one in Freeport on Long Island. They have spread to areas of New Jersey. They build large colony nests often on transmission poles/lines near electrical transformers, which keep the nest warm in the winter. The electrical company in NJ has a ritual of removing the nests from the electrical lines every March before breeding season, since they create a fire hazard. Union Here is the toxicology on the dead chick. This is not good and really says something about the environment at and near this nest sight. I worry about the parents that are probably also exposed. See below from the Union County cam website.  Betty Ann Kelly ยท Stockton University Here is the toxicology report information for the eyas. Please note that most tox guidelines for what is toxic vs. not are devised for adult birds, not small chicks. The report done by the vet states that the lead level was high, and the exposure to DDE and PCBs was significant for a small chick. Lead is known for neurological effects, which is what Wildlife Biologist, Kathy Clark noted and surmised might be happening when our chick could not hold it's head up. |

JC: Every time I have checked the eyas has been in the corner. She matches the poop walls perfectly. She seems to be a timid bird. Quite unlike Shady Lady Ivy, who was all over the place. She sure is getting a lot of her juvie feathers! |

Jersey City Pics from yesterday, Saturday 7/1. Yes, I agree...our "big" girl is quite timid. She got one foot out on the ramp yesterday, but didn't go down it. I don't know if she has traveled down it yet to explore. 5:48 pm - Juliet checking in on our girl, who was quite vocal.  6:03 pm - One foot on the ramp. Love the pantaloons.

The lead and toxin findings in Union County are very concerning and I wonder if they tested for that when they did the banding at Jersey City. The two sites are not very far apart. I'm just very concerned about these Jersey falcons in urban environments. |

JC Well, the eyas eyed the ramp and that giant leap for a peregrine. Maybe she will back down? She is getting awfully big to be spending all her time in the scrape. I'm waiting for the wingercizing!
