I always hate to see a lone chick. Good for the parents and no competition for food for the chick, still, watching 2 or more chicks interact and grow together seems happier. I get it though. It's always super sad to watch them sit on eggs forever when they will never hatch. Or at the other nest, watching the smaller chick struggle to get food at each meal. I'm not familiar with either nest and wish the best for both.

Well, Mom's not giving it much room...but, for now, it doesn't seem to mind.

BBB

Just coming to report the sad news from Facebook. One of the chicks passed away during the night/early morning [5/20 or 5/21] Unknown reasons. You have to wonder if the stress of banding exacerbated a pre-existing condition...who knows.

Its rare, but we have actually seen this happen before right after a banding. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which nest(s). Nevertheless, extremely sad....to make it to this age and then pass. :sigh :sorrow:

Thanks tsusan...I forgot to post that sad news here. Necropsies are being done on the chicks, but according to FB, they do suspect poison...but, we better wait for results before we draw that conclusion.

On a happier note, the Foster Chick at Palmyra has been banded: Female b/g BM/50 :15heartbeat:

:girlyes: Well, that was short lived... looks like the juvie was run off by an adult peregrine who is sitting here at the edge of the nest box... :teehee:

It had a black over green band with the code BA over 56 I think. I couldn't find it on the calendar but maybe somebody has access to the database?

Palmyra Grove- An adult peregrine is standing quietly inside the nest box (use inside the nest box cam... )
EDITOh my- the first year juvie is back and chased the adult out of the box!Now the juvie is perched on the chain on our right..... ...Two hours later and the sassy littl juvie is perched on the edge of the nest box platform, behind a couple metal posts..... stalking? the adult.. (I promise, Im not making this up! )
