Maybe lack of incubation by dad is taking longer for the eggs to hatch. I bring the cam up every day but its mom incubating, which is too exciting. :imbored:

She's getting kind of nonchalant about incubating those eggs. I noticed she had one out this afternoon (different one). :girlsad3:

We had a hatch today at approx 4:20pm. The female was off the nest & the male came in. He has not done any incubation. He picked the chick up and carried it out of cam range.

Trying to look back through the hours from 4-8 to figure out what else has taken place. I thought I saw Val come back on at 8:10pm ish, and thought I saw 5 eggs, so I don't know if there was another hatch & he carried the 2nd or if she did, or if it was a dud egg.

ETA: at about 6pm, Val took an egg that had a hole in it out of the nest. I didn't see anything in it, so I don't know if it was a dud/rotten egg, or if the eyas died during hatch?

I just think the young one wasn't fully aware of what was going on. In my personal opinion, if he had incubated, maybe he would have felt the chicks moving and possibly would have known what was happening. Maybe it is because he's so young his hormones are not fully developed. I don't blame him at all. I think it's just a little more maturity on his part. If there are more hatches, hopefully Val will be on the nest.

Val was off the nest this morning eating. They had some close-ups of the eggs, but I didn't see anything from the position the eggs were in. If I go back and look at Val's position prior to leaving the eggs this morning, she's got all her back feathers up, and seemed to be somewhat interested in what was happening below her. I think there may be additional viable eggs, but only time will tell.

I think all hope had been given up since they expected hatch around 6/5 and 1 week out, they thought the it was a failed nest. Val was off the eggs Sun or Mon for about 7-8+ hours, so they thought she was abandoning the clutch. There was some discussion on the board about removing the eggs, but that would not happen until much later in the year/season. Glad that they were not too eager to remove them. I think this is important information that larger/double clutches may take many more days to hatch.

That make sense. He probably looked at the chick as food. :girlsad3:

I never judge a falcon. But I trust our falcons and some things just cannot be explained.

Will just wait and see and he will learn. He certainly is growing into a stunning male. Remember Polly at Montreal. And she matured into a wonderful female :7val:

Yep. I think he will be great next year, but not sure there will be a cam. I think it may have already been posted, but PG&E are leaving the building. They are moving across the bay to Oakland. So, no idea who will provide cam feed.

Exact same thing happened this year at the nest in Eindhoven (NL) Catharina church.
New young male after 3 eggs were laid. He never incubated so it was quite a surprise that one egg hatched 47 days after the first one was laid. Female left the chick, probably to get food, male came in and took the chick away. I really believe he saw it as food/prey. He never got into the "breeding mode"

Both adults there. Not ready for falcons or nesting, but just letting you know
