I briefly checked the cam a few minutes before 7 and checked back around 20 after. Looks like I just missed seeing the falcons. Jane, glad you made it downtown, sorry you didn't see "our" falcons. This feels like uncharted territory with two strangers hanging around and no sign of Lil Dad or Niecey. I hope they both show up soon and retake their ledge.

I hope these two move on again and that our residents return from wherever they are. I can't imagine Niecey being in the area and letting this pair get away with this activity for long. I don't know much about birds' senses and whether or not they can smell scents, but if they can, would they smell the scent of the resident pair in the nest box, especially being that it's outside?

I hope they are looking at this as a nice place to hang out for a short bit during their migration, then move on or go back to wherever they belong.

In answer to your question, most birds have little or no sense of smell, the chief exception to this being the turkey vulture. So this pair would not smell traces of our residents, nor will our residents smell them when they come back (see what I did there - assuming a happy ending?). I don't think the intruders' presence will go unnoticed however!

I was also going to comment that falcons don't have a sense of smell. I know of a location that's probably 10 air miles south of Harrisburg where a pair of Peregrines took over an Osprey nest last summer (2016) and had young ones. This year they did not nest there, although they were around. I personally saw them mating. I know the male was banded, but don't know his numbers. The female was unbanded. I will see if I can find the info on that male's band numbers, for somebody was able to read them through pictures. And I forget who asked, but it was somewhere around January 25 or 26 of 2017 when Little Dad returned.

I bet these are the same two that were here last year, well I know the male is the same anyway. I wonder if they are a pair and looking to upgrade their nest. With no sense of other falcons being around, I guess they think they've hit the jackpot. (I didn't know they had poor sense of smell) It may be a while before Lil' Dad returns. I wonder if he didn't return , would Niecey stay with the new male or if the new female would be his mate. I know that Niecey and the male mated last year. I guess there would have to be a battle. It's too miserable to think about for very long. Curious about the pair at the osprey nest though, might be these two. They are sweet and the male is a hoot, but I was watching him on the point today and thought to myself, nowhere near as cute, sweet, and funny as Lil' Dad. I love that guy.

Thanks for the responses about lack of a sense of smell. If these two are the pair that Jane mentioned from the area, I hope they realize that they need to go elsewhere soon. It bothers me that neither of our resident pair are around right now. I too am trying to have a positive outlook that they WILL be back.
