No, no Racoon. I went back and looked in archives and it appears to be half an eggshell. When the female came in she must have kicked it over. The male has a black/red band and she has black/blue band. Here's hoping for a good outcome!

Edit - There could have been a racoon because it was dark in the nest from 8 p.m. until 7a.m. The egg was in the bottom left hand corner before dark and then morning it had been moved. :egg8:

3rd Peregrines - Good or bad sign?

Today at our Rockford site a third Peregrine briefly landed on the natal ledge. The entire encounter lasted less than a minute with the intruder ultimately flying off.

While an invading Peregrine can be a nuisance for the resident pair, it is not necessarily a bad sign. In Peregrine falcons, a ratio of one or more floaters to one breeder could be expected for healthy populations even considering when productivity was potentially impacted by the floaters interference.

Research is still required to begin understanding the dynamics and role of these floater individuals.
