10/16/17 at 1:00 am, Diamond has been sleeping by the chicks, she woke up, did some preening, and is now retucked and sleeping.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There was a sad post on the CSU blog, which I am bringing over below. The coverage here has been so awesome, especially considering how often the cams are down. We missed this bit of sibling rivalry, though.

Have a good Sunday. Here's hoping for a good day for the littlest chick too.

Sibling agression
Published 15 October, 2017 | By Cilla Kinross
I hope this doesn’t keep up. The older chick Marragaay had real go at the younger one, Bali, with considerable blood loss. I was just thinking how well they were doing. I was trying to get up to date, but was only up to noon today, so I decided to fast forward so I could give you an update, when I saw this.

Bad blood between siblings

They are now cuddle up in the corner as if nothing has happened, but Bali is very quiet (but moving). Mum is sitting on the ledge. I haven’t observed this behaviour before in nine years, but it may not be unknown. Bickering yes, but not drawing blood. I’ll check and see how much much prey was brought in this afternoon tomorrow, but I’ve had it tonight.

The only other thing of note to happen is that it’s possible that a couple of bats were brought in as prey very early in the morning. I can’t be sure as the images are not great.

Molly from this material can not say that it is aggression.

Young produced pellets, according to me

Thats pretty nasty

Molly thanks for the notes - as always.
I had noticed aggression myself - and thats odd for falcons.
If the parents are bringing in bats, my first thot was
RABIES

Another thot - chicks will peck another chick with a wound.
Might bugs have bitten, drawing blood?

only my thot - nothing else

:pumplaugh:

Hi Shepherd! You're welcome. It's nice to be of help.

Ioza, I don't understand your post. I didn't use the word "aggression", but it does seem to apply. The short video Cilla made is kind of sad and disturbing.

:halcat: The blood looks "topside" to me. Hopefully, someone had a bloody dinner. Agree loza, or a piece of bone caught in its throat from supper. Bali just seems to have been immediately under "the action" in both scenarios ... I hope, I hope, I hope! :teehee:

Just saw your post coming back in after typing mine, Terka.

Yes, I agree it is difficult to tell what happened from the short video and pics from the CSU blog. It could be food on the the younger chick and not its own blood.

On the other hand, I remember a few days ago someone (Shep?) said she'd witnessed some sibling rivalry with the older chick being kind of nasty to the younger one.

Also, Cilla said the older chick drew the blood and Cilla could see the complete scene unfold when she concluded it was aggression. I think Cilla said the picture goes black for us but she can see and record everything, so she saw more than we did.

Just my thoughts. If someone emails Cilla about it, it would be great if you'd share her response with us. I'm curious. :hatchegg:

Thanks,

Molly
