weber august 2
it is with great sadness that I report that we lost N32(yellow) this evening at Weber, Barb was there at the time watching all 4 play tag and have fun. REd was on the W and yellow flew off low. Barb lost sight of yellow and thought he had come down . She kept looking for him and then lo and behold in he came flying with hi s own prey, that he caught , and flew up to the W by red. They did not tussle over it. Barb said , it almost appeared he was giving it to Red. and then he dropped it and he flew off around the SW corner with red behind. BARb lost sight of red but yellow hit the building, a window or cement. she did not think he hit hard and was hoping he was just stunned. but unfortunately , he broke his neck.
It is never easy to retrieve these wonderful falcons. such beauty, but I want you to think of the positive. He had a mind of his own and flew well right from the start. He did all that a young falcon should do. And he finally mastered the next step. He caught his own prey. so proud of you Yellow. but it was not meant to be. Soar high Yellow , there are many awaiting you. We were blessed to have watched you while we could . Love Bev and Peter and BArb.

I edited as I put in wrong band number

Yellow was such a beautiful flyer, right from the get-go. Definitely sad news, but you're right, Bev, he did wonderfully well for the two weeks he was flying! Plus, having him around, helped Red, I'm sure! And getting his own prey?! That's brilliant!! If only his story had a happier, migratory ending. I guess that is the peril of watching these beauties, but I wouldn't trade marveling at his beauty, speed and daring in flight for anything as I feel very privileged to have witnessed it at all!! Soar ever higher, Yellow!! <3

You are so right Piffle. we are so fortunate to be able to watch these wonderful beauties.
some stories end much quicker, and I only wish we could get all falcons back to nature. I can handle nature, not buildings. and traffic

I know I was upset with Gord, for taking falcons from our nests. But at least he is trying to get the birds back to nature. To give them a chance , and males imprint the best on the cliffs. these birds, we lost this year would be flying high at Pembina. ( I was more upset that we were left with the females)
So agree with it or not, think of all the losses in the cities this year( USA and Canada ). count them and then think, which is better. Gord would never leave parents without young, but he is trying to give as many as possible the chance to go to migration and then come back to the cliffs or more natural areas.

And when I think again of it , I look at our current males at Bell and WEber . in last two years they have been males from U of A and Weber. so when born here , they imprint on the urban.
Rochester has a wonderful area. the birds can go to the gorge. so they have a lot of success. some urban areas are not as bad as the ones with tall skyscrapers etc.( Toronto)

so just food for thought. Picking up these marvelous birds takes its toll.( and Gord was just as upset as we were last night , when we contacted him as he was out two days before watching them fly so well .)

feeling defeated today

thanks SGB.
do you remember ber 2 years ago when charlotte was given a youngster. He did that, climbed on the side. B73 has been doing this also. stretching maybe.

B73 is looking great and ready to go.

B88 needs more days and i hope he realizes that.

I sure do, Bev. B73 did the same thing on the other side. Didn't post that pic because it wasn't very good...

well we knew B88 would have trouble, as he was not developing as quick as he should. but it was thought that , it was good to put him back and see what transpired. It was good for B73 , as he had to learn to compete for food. B88 is a little go getter and B73 , struggled but soon learned dhow to get his own.
b88 had companionship and they got along well, except where food was concerned

up until Sunday when cams went down, B88 was looking good food wise ,but tail feather shafts were spotty( we have seen this before) and he had a lot of fluff. Not good time for cam to go down.
but when it came up on Tuesday, we saw B73 come in later in evening , with prey. He left and we think it was B88 that came in and slept in corner. He had no crop and was fluffy. We cannot be 100 percent as we could not see bands

WEdnesday we saw no one .

yesterday, august9, I go t an email from RFOfalcon ( who is on holidays) saying they found our missing falcon, it was on the ground , not injured, but not in good shape. What a great crew he has there. they all went looking an after spotting him, they caught him, put him a box and put him in security room ,
.
I called ROFfalcon and said Peter would go and retrieve him. But we phoned Gord to let him know and he was on his way with food and water.

so B88 is fine, just scrawny and his tail feather shafts are sparse. Now he was not scrawny on Sunday, so he must have tired to fly and without food and water, he was lucky he was found. We are in major heat wave of over 30C days for a week now. WE are not used to this and either are our birds.

Gord is feeding him up to get him stronger. He was running around in Gords yard :teehee: He more and likely will have to winter over.
S even thought, this did not work out, it was good for both. at this site, we knew if he came to ground, he would be found. there would be not much to hurt him.

on a good note , B73 came into nest looking for food yesterday afternoon . He looked good

here is video

I have to go and make it public
