bell july2 Gord banded here and one chick had frounce and he took one to hack site. So we were left with a male and small female. He was able to treat with one pill
Since 2006 , I have faithfully watched these and other falcons in the Edmonton area and beyond, and then Emyrauld offered to help me monitor cams, which has been a real God send. this year, it has presented a real challenge. At the worst possible time, they decided to take out history , sound and insert. This is a site, which is nigh to impossible to monitor from ground, and this year with more construction south, it was even more crucial to have cams functioning .
In previous years, we have saved many chicks that have accidentally been knocked off or went too soon, because we could see in insert and could go back in history , if we did not get cams up , as soon as we would have liked. I was able to notify Dr. court and most times , he was able to retrieve chicks not far from where we saw them go off , or where we last heard them. The sooner chicks are located the better their chances for survival.
One year when E4 was here , we were able to see her being challenged via the insert and could hear it from the sound. After monitoring for years , you know when it is a defending sound, or friendly. When she and Big Red did not nest at site, I was able to notify Dr. Court and we went looking. and voila, she was found by Dr. Court nesting elsewhere.
Other years , when we could not see kids we could hear them. Sound tells a lot.
So I guess I find myself reevaluating, why I bother to do this. Most people who take the time to monitor cams, do get some enjoyment from watching chicks grow and develop, but more importantly, we use them to learn and document habits , and daily activities to keep the adults and chicks safe. This is not a fairy tale , it is reality. The falcons reality.
So this is why I have not been keeping things as up to date as I usually do. Spending many extra hours, with cams . Luckily , I spent money on a recorder , as I do have a life. But if cams buffer or go off air , I am not always around to restart, then all is for naught .
