The Netherlands, Nederland, is the official name.

I've searched the Internet but there are several explanations for why the Netherlands and why Holland.

Google translator: Nederland = noun or substantief and Holland = adjective

Nederland means: country under water level.

I find it uncomfortable to be called Hollandse, I'm Nederlandse (Dutch) and I'm proud to be Nederlandse Image

I will try to find out more, but to translate is difficult

It's more a village Beth.
Around 30.000 inhabitants.
28.000 of them, including me, are not born here. it is a growth town.

The name of the village is interesting: Duiven, which means Pigeons
We have in our village a peregrine falcon couple (Bob and Bea),
but the eggs they produced last years and this year did not materialize unfortunately.

There is a large silence area where no cars are allowed, one can walking or cycling there for hours.
You can hear nature, it's beautiful :)

Duiven is just a view miles from Arnhem, perhaps known from the Richard Attenborough movie A Bridge too far.
The area is polder (can't find an other word for it)

Food does not play as large a role in hospitality in the Netherlands :?:

The Dutch tend to be less competitive than many other Westerners :?:

Thanks, Beth, for starting this topic. And many thanks, marjanne, for all the interesting information and the pictures. It looks like you're living in a very nice town and area.

P.S. I'll stop using the name "Holland" and instead use "the Netherlands" (the U.S. version of your "Nederland"). We generally call the people who live in your country the Dutch, and we speak of your language as being Dutch. I hope that's acceptable.

Let me just say, the richer the people, the less hospitable. But that is my experience 8-)

There is much more behind the word holland.
I will try to find someone to help me translate in the right words.

marjanne - I learned something new today already . . . that "Holland" is a part of the Netherlands. If the following information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland is correct, what used to be the County of Holland centuries ago is now two Dutch provinces: North Holland and South Holland.

"Holland is a name in common usage given to a region in the western part of the Netherlands. The name 'Holland' is also often used to refer to the whole of the Netherlands, although this is not formally correct. From the 10th century to the 16th century it was a unified political region, a county ruled by the Count of Holland. By the 17th century, Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the Dutch Republic. Today, the former County of Holland consists of the two Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland."

This part Catbird:

Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the Dutch Republic.

It's not a republic anymore but a kingdom, but the two hollands still dominating.
For instance: in the national news on television, 14 minutes is talking about the two hollands and one minute remains for the rest of the Netherlands.
(Most television studios are in North-Holland)
Many of the inhabitants of the two Hollands (fortunately not all) think we are 'stupid'.

I do not want to generalize or hurt anybody , but that is the situation unfortunately.

I hope you understand what i mean, I can not explain better

Thanks for the clarification, marjanne. I think I understand what you mean now.

I also think the situation there is probably similar to that of many other countries, including the U.S., where the major metropolitan areas tend to dominate the less populated areas in terms of news coverage, attitude, etc.

Beth:

At least 90% of the Dutch men watching soccer. Many of them play themselves.
(which means that many women also háve to watch or they can go to a Tupperware party Image)
Six out of ten people sports
I think, second sport is cycling and the third tennis or skating

I love to watch cycling and I did gymnastics until 4 years ago. With a frozen shoulder I had to stop.

Catbird:

That is exactly what I mean.
