Great video, Priscilla, thank you.

The 4th owlet hatched 2 days ago, so it is considerably smaller than the older ones and there is concern about its chances of survival. The remaining two eggs aren't viable probably.

We would like to welcome tiny owlet n. 5 to the world in our Texas Barn Owl box. Hatched yesterday evening the little chick is the size its oldest sibling's head! Thanks to Twitter follower Sophialist for this great image.

Unfortunately there is the possibility that the little one may not survive. To find out more please see http://bit.ly/BarnOwl_Survival

I'm starting to get really worried about #5. I don't see any growth, and I don't often see any evidence of it getting anything to eat. I know he'd be dead now if he wasn't getting anything, but I am not seeing any growth. :eggsad:

A picture from yesterday. All owlets are visible. Big differences in size.

Unfortunately, the youngest owlet (#5) died on May 18. But the other ones seem to be OK.

The TexasBarnOwls are close to branching, check out this clip from this morning of an almost branch attempt

When the Barn Owls leave the nest for the first time they may just stay on the porch just outside the entrance (branching), or attempt a few hopping flights, possibly on to the roof of the box or surrounding bars of the pavilion roof. As Barn Owl nestlings go straight from second down to adult plumage in the nest they are able to fly relatively soon after they leave the nest. First flights can occur around 50–55 days of age.
Departure from nest is extended; fledglings will return to nest box to roost for several weeks and may roost in the vicinity of the nest for 7–8 weeks after flying. Departure from the nest occurs at night.

The barn owl box is roughly 22-24 inches high, 26 inches from the cam to the back of the box and 18 or so inches in width. It is positioned in the rafters of an open air pavilion approximately 10-12 feet off the ground.
Many viewers have taken to calling the oldest owlet Dixie and the youngest owlet Ollie or Peanut.

Two of the owlets headed out on the porch this morning, both flapping wings and checking out the surroundings.

I've just loved following this family. I'll be sad when we can no longer tell them apart. I'm so glad they are doing so good!

I think what I'm enjoying the most is how #1 (Dixie) takes such good care of her siblings, especially #4 (Ollie) :flirty:

One of the owlets has not been seen since 6:41 am this morning. People are saying it's number 3, the one some have named Lacey. :tissue: Holding out hope that she comes to the next box for something to eat once it gets dark. Sheesh, can't someone on that property, go into that barn and see if they can locate her?????
