At 10:35:22 nest time, Sienna left her nest and got on the rock next to Jina to mess with their stash and has settled on that rock leaning against Jina for the last 2 hours and 40 minutes. This is the longest I have ever known her to do this. Her eggs are in view and I do not see any pips. She seems so "at ease" with this and "settled".

The instinct to tend owlets is stronger than the instinct to incubate eggs. This is an interesting cam to watch. If the girls let the eggs go, and thats what it looks like, I wonder if one of the girls will fly off, leaving the other to raise the young.

At 13:37, Jina gets up having been eased off her chicks for awhile by Sienna and checks their stash, then off to incubate Sienna's eggs. After 2 minutes, she is up again, gets on the rock next to Sienna, but Sienna is not going to budge. She then goes back to incubating Sienna's eggs.

:eggthumb: Same scenario, Sienna steals nest of Jina for awhile and eventually returns to her eggs.

One of the girls was on the eggs when Dad Arie came.
This time he gave the prey to the owl on the eggs.
First time I've seen that.
Was that a message? LOL!

yeah SWIN they both want the babies

If today is any sign of what is to come ... it just does not look good for the eggs or poor Jina to raise her babes ... Sienna may be in the process of a nest takeover ... :girlsad3:

Oh, oh!! Sienna flew and Jina reclaimed her babes ... Sienna returned to resume her brooding of the chicks, but Jina was not having it!! She got off her chicks and approached Sienna who was a few feet down to the right and I witnessed the most aggression toward Sienna to date ... Jina used her beak and wings against Sienna!! :taz: Sienna got the message and after Jina returned to her chicks ... Sienna gingerly tip toed past Jina and returned to her eggs. No telling how many hours they have sat unattended today ... :girlsad3:

SWIN, thats NOT a bad thing.
Perhaps those 2 eggs will hatch, then both girls will parent all owlets. I was thinking Sassy that raven'd get the eggs - its so bold!

It looked like S stept on an owlet - both are on J's side

:egg19: Following are a few comments made by Karla from The International Owl Center on chat this eve, in a nutshell:

1. Sienna has been off eggs way too long for them to hatch. 2. They may be sisters, but mother-daughter more likely as Mom could have skipped being territorial with her daughter. 3.There is a stronger instinct to feed live chicks, than sit on eggs.

:egg15: I tried to copy verbatim, but site does not allow. I soooooooooooooooo wanted Sienna's eggs to hatch, but I think she is right on all three counts!!

And with that, I leave you BCAW... :dancegirl:

Here's a look at the owlets today while Jina was sunning herself and Sienna was babysitting. It is believed that Jina is the owlets' mother while Sienna is presumed to be Jina's mother. Cooperative mothering going on here with some minor skirmishes between the two to establish boundaries. However, you can really see the experience that Sienna brings to caring for these owlets compared to Jina, who is believed to be a 1st year mom. Sienna was very instrumental in helping protect the owlets during severe winds this weekend and she is clearly more experienced at feeding. Interesting dynamic. Wonder if they will go their separate way once the owlets are on their own.

549pm - Both Sienna (left) and Jina hooting together. Arie (dad) probably nearby.

Hahahahahaha!! Sorry, Shepherd!! That's not what I meant. I was just leaving the site @ the moment with those thoughts on this nest. Haven't been able to post over the last week, although I have been able to view some. Sorry about that. Have you been gone too? The kids are huuuuuuge!! :dancegirl:

The owlets are just get to the interesting stage when they will start to walk about.
I imagine Jina will fly away to find a new mate and territory when owlets fledge.

:eggthumb: Nadia, I agree the fights between Sienna and Jina are minor in the sense that we do not see visible injuries afterwards. However, there is an escalation in frequency and the actual engagement. Initially, only beaks were involved. Then, beaks and wings. Then, beaks and wings and talon grabbing. Now, we have all of the previous, plus Jina flying off the ledge and stopping Sienna mid-flight from landing with her body. There is a video of this and they were able to capture both gals before Sienna goes offscreen. You can always tell when Jina is angry and had enough as she holds her "ears" flush against her body as we see in angry dogs or cats. Many times with Sienna being the larger of the 2, she has pinned Jina nearly flat on her back. I worry about the full extensions of the wing flapping accidentally slinging one of the chicks out of the nest someday. Initially, Jina was trying to feed the chicks without shredding first, but now her skills have improved. Sienna did do a great job protecting the chicks from the heavy winds last week, but I bet if Sienna had not been there, we would have witnessed Jina doing the same. So far, Jina has run Sienna off the nest twice tonight ... with her ears pinned back, of course!! :teehee:

Gee, I'll have to buy some owl tuft pins and send to Jina

Great report SWIN!

I predict these 2 will NOT co-nest next year!
Which one wins this year I wont predict, but my intuition favors Jina
