The owlets have been given Latin names, like their Mom. The older owlet is Primo, meaning 1st and the younger owlet is Secundo, meaning 2nd.

8:37 pm Oklahoma time. Primo's head is visible here while laying on top of Secundo.

7:01pm Oklahoma time. Altera went on a fly-about. Big size difference between the owlets. Primo on the right and Secundo on the left. Looks like Primo's eyes may be just starting to open a bit.

Shep, I can see Loza's video's. Hmmm.

OKC

Primo's eyes are partially open today and the owlet is able to sit up and notice things in its environment. Secundo still has closed eyes, but seems to be the more vocal of the two...lol. Altera is not brooding as much anymore.

Prino's eyes are now wide open and Secundo's eyes are just opening. Primo ended up behind Mom today. They are starting to travel about the plantar.

4:42 pm - Secundo on the left seeing the world. Primo on the right sleeping on a rabbit.

5:30 pm - Primo behind Mom with eyes wide open

Primo has large patches of exposed skin, especially on the back. Someone on chat mentioned that the denuded skin seemed more than usual, but the moderator didn't respond. Not sure if this is normal, but the owlet seems fine in all other respects. This pic is just a small sampling.

Altera with foot in mouth...lol.

Well...it appears that the staring contest by Rusty and his hoots at Iris were all an effort to get her up, so he could check things out in the nest...lol. How sweet is that? :15heartbeat:

8:20 pm - Iris gets up to reveal the 2 eggs.

8:21 pm - Rusty moves in quickly to get a glimpse of the eggs.

9:46 pm - It's evening and the kids are wide awake, as they should. Primo is quite the explorer, In this pic you can see the size difference between the owlets. They are 2 1/2 days apart in age, but Secundo is much smaller. It's believed that Primo is a girl and Secundo is probably her baby brother.

Baby owlets are cutest when they begin to waddle about.
#2 having that much exposed skin is concerning.

Bird skin diseases

A hormonal imbalance and genetics are believed to be responsible. Baldness can also be caused by over-preening by a mate. Inactive, undersized and/or diseased follicles are common causes of baldness. Patchy feather-loss on a bird can be a sign of Vitamin A deficiency, which can be treated by supplementing your bird's diet accordingly. Patchy feather loss can also be caused by ringworms.

An abnormal molt occurs on some birds, causing them to lose all of their head feathers at once. The birds may be juveniles undergoing their first prebasic molt. It's also possible that feather mites or feather lice may cause baldness.

Iris & Rusty

This pic is from last night. I opened the cam to find Iris getting off the nest with a rat in her mouth. Probably heading out to dine. Rusty flew to one of the branches outside the nest and peered in...checking out the eggs from a distance. He eventually moved slowly toward the eggs and Iris flew in. She is so protective. They both did an egg inspection together with Rusty hooting away. So sweet. I captured this pic as Iris settled back on the nest. First hatch expected Saturday, April 1st.

11:34 pm - Rusty on the left and Iris back in the nest.

These pics are from yesterday, 3/25. Oklahoma time.

The owlets are really growing fast. Primo has gotten so big and her feathers are coming in nicely. They both want to snuggle with Mom whenever she's in the nest. They stay very close to her...either under her or leaning up against her. They seek her comfort. There is often activity in the street and she has probably told them to stay close. Primo is usually in the back seat behind Altera. This owlet is just too big to get under Mom anymore, except for under her tail...lol. Secundo, probably a male is usually right up front and under Altera. They are adorable and Altera is a wonderful Mom.

1:03 pm - Primo in the back seat behind Altera, using Mom as a pillow to sleep away the day.
Image

1:53 pm - Secundo up front and under Mom, as usual.

4:31 pm - Oklahoma time. Look at that face on Primo peaking out from behind Mom. Such a cutie. She's really starting to look like an owl. Being in the back seat behind Mom, she had just missed a feed. Once Altera turned around to look at her, Primo started food begging. "Heh Mom, you forgot about me!" Precious!

:shamrock5: The microphone has picked up peeps when Iris gets off the nest. Per chat, a pip usually develops about 1-2 days after the chick breaks into the air sac and starts vocalizing. We should have a hatch soon! :15heartbeat:
