3 adult owls
5 eggs
2 hatchs
Not a good year for reproduction stats
But a fascinating study year
I may go back thru notes and do a writeup after these kids fledge

:flirty: Sienna is starting to spend more time off the nest @ night. She may be hunting and/or Aries is passing prey to her that she brings to the nest. At one point last night, she was gone almost 3 hours while I kept an eye on the nest. Right now she has been gone almost 2 hours. I think I am not seeing Aries make as many visits through the night, but need to pay more attention.

April 11
Jina is with the kids - Sienna's been gone.
Jina left them alone briefly.
Looks like plenty food laying about.

We dont know what the story is.
Reno, Nevada is desert. How plentiful is prey?
If prey is plentiful and Dad Arie is providing,
its very possible Sienna will take off and be gone, not return.
We simply dont know

:flirty: Feed in progress! Being fed by both Sienna and Jina. Sienna has control of the prey currently being fed to the chicks and sometimes Jina takes it from Siena's beak and then gives it to one of her chicks. She is not eating it for herself while I watched.

Jina just chased Sienna off again
I think soon Sienna will simply fly off, leaving this nest to Jina

Sienna gave her eggs away when she could have hatched her own brood.

mixed feelings

:eggthumb: Remember, Karla (the expert with GHO'S) said the instinct to feed the young present is stronger than incubating the eggs. That had to be tough for Sienna. I don't think Sienna has any intentions of leaving, she remains the dominant female, although Jina is standing her ground more and more. Sienna's role is changing over to provider/hunter along with Aries during the night shift. I notice some of the tussles are over who tucks in the kids or protects and other tussles are over the prey. I think the way Jina sees it, once the prey is brought in, it is for her young, period! it does not matter if Sienna brought it in or Aries. Even if Jina is not ready to feed her young, Sienna better not handle it in any manner. You'll notice her take it from Sienna frequently and place it in the pile of prey, where she wants it. Here is a video of one of the tussles during the night. Remember for those who do not follow closely, Jina is smaller and lighter in color and it is most noticeable when her back is to us. Normally, both "ears" are frequently flush with her body when she is upset. Otherwise, she only has one that is noticeable, as the other one is only partially there, Sienna's "ears" are always up. (I realize these feathers are not ears, but feathers.) I have witnessed fusses that are more intense than this.

Yes the tufts are feathers - but they use them exactly as a cats ears and I read them the same way. Yep Jina is lighter. I know of Karla - I used to watch her owls Iris and Rusty. Wise woman.
Sienna likely eats when she's gone.

Did not know she was involved with Iris and Rusty. Yes, I remembered that you are a fan of Karla!
:flirty: Love your owl with the flag, Shep! I look @ it as him telling us he's got our backs through the nights!!

:eggthumb: All is well! Just checked the DVR and Sienna was gone quite a bit. Saw some big snowflakes earlier in the night, but don't think it stuck. Not as windy this morning. Sienna and Jina were "lovey dovey" on Sienna's most recent return to the nest.

:flirty: :flirty: :flirty: About 35' to 40' ago, with Jina on the nest, Aries brought a bunny to the ledge. He hopped down and went over to the kids ... then he started shaking the bunny back and forth to tempt them. Finally, one of them snatches the bunny from him, he watches a second and away he goes. The cutest interaction I have seen here and the first one I've witnessed between him and the kids!! I hope someone had their recorder on and we get a video @ some point. Wow!! :teehee:

:nervous: Oh, oh!! Sienna came in and Jina jumped to the ledge and headed her off with wings flapping. When Sienna tries to approach the nest, Jina hops up and puts her talon in Sienna's chest, Jina does not want her near that rabbit. She runs her off and slams Sienna in the back ... two different times I think. I'm tired and not going back, but hoping for a video by morning. I don't think she wanted Sienna to feed her kids that rabbit. She is becoming a stronger and more forceful owl and it seems to me it all stems from motherhood!! This was the first time I witnessed talons to chest, it is normally talon to talon or talon holding down other's foot.

A lot of videos last night, but unable to locate any with the 2 scenarios I described above. :egg15: And yes, please don't think it, I know ... :teehee:

:taz: Jina is fighting fiercely to protect her owlets from strong winds ... she is being upended frequently ... she has about 4 1/2 hours to go. Sienna has been gone since morning.

:egg14: Right after the above post, Jina was blown half way off of them, then upended the rest of the way! Eventually, one of the owlets stood and began preening itself in the wind, which does not toss it about as it does his mother! :teehee: Jina remains to the immediate side of them. Stay safe all!!

Chat is reporting Sienna was off the nest most of day yesterday. Has previously altered routine by remaining away for long periods during the night. Still a little windy today and Sienna is on the nest with Jina and the owlets.

Jina was off the nest for varying periods over the last 4 hours. Saw Sienna once. Owlets huddle together when alone. :flirty:

:flirty: Jina and Sienna are both sleeping with the owlets tucked away out of view. Wonder what the Moms were doing, when they were off cam-view last night ...
