Just read this over at RRP :sosad2
I just read a report from Sutton. on this site. They checked all their cam shots out and about 8:45 last nite, with a parent in nest, eaglet restless but a flurry of parent head and much action leads them to believe a predator got our eaglet. He was allways pushing the limit, but it was about dark and he shoulda been a little settled. The darkness of the night prevented the cameras from showing what ,but a team from Sutton is going out there to see if they can determine what happened. The nest has been bothered before,I seem to remember

Just found this at hancock from Pandalover
Alan Jenkins with Sutton came on to the Tulsa Chat about 1/2 hour ago to share
this with us:
Ryan and Steve are at the nest, Ryan is about to climb into it.
the young eagle was found below the nest.
Sorry, I wasn't sure myself. But Ryan confirms that the eagle died.
It's cause of death could have been falling owing to a predator attempting to catch it.
We will have to wait and see if there are some other clues.

Some of this is the same as what Kitten posted. :( Poor baby.

Quote:
4 May: Sad to say, but it appears the young eaglet in the Sooner Lake camera nest was killed by a predator last night. We have reviewed the archived nest camera footage, but can't see what the predator was. A Great Horned Owl, raccoon or bobcat are likely predators.

The archived footage shows the young eagle on the nest with an adult, likely the female, brooding the young eaglet by covering his head with her breast, typical behavior at this stage in the rearing cycle. The last time we can see the eaglet on the nest, the last time there is sufficient light to discern the nestling's presence with certainty, is at 8:42 pm last night, May 3rd. After that time it gets too dark to see it; however, the adult's white head can be seen in the frame until 8:45 pm. At 8:47 pm there seems to be some rapid and blurry action on the nest. There is a long gap in the video after 8:47 pm because the camera only records archival footage when it detects motion. The next video occurs at 8:08 am, May 4th. At that time the nestling is missing, and an adult lands on the nest. Our best interpretation is that a predator of unknown species caught the young on the nest at 8:47 pm last night, and the adults stayed away until 8:08 am today.

We will be sending someone qualified to assess and manage possible situations at the nest site, someone who can search for whatever clues to the eaglet's fate may be discernable

Oh, how horrible! The first two blew off, and now this? What a tragedy for the parents. :-(

Patis at RRP just posted this
Sutton had a full report on their site today. After 3 of their experts examined
the films diligently they determined that Trouble was stretching and fell out
and the flurry was when parent went into protective stance as bald eagles
do when threatened..He didn't have a mark except for one feather that was
coming in was broke..I ould imagine the the parents were close all night as
his body was un-marked by predators..or anything else....still the fault of
that rickety,too small nest

Thanks for that update, kittenface. It is so unbelievable that out of 3 eggs none fledged. Maybe next year the parents can reinforce and enlarge that nest. What a shock it must have been for those poor parents when their only child fell.

To me it looks like something (critter) in the nest?

Wow, that nest sure is messed up. I couldn't make out a critter in there, though. I believe this is the site where the eagles didn't nest there this past season but built another one in a tree nearby.
