Thank you, Beth. I started working on that video last year, when the eagles returned to their nest. It was supposed to be the Farewell Hornby Island Bald Eagles tribute....

beans, I am still too sensitive and sick over the losses at Columbus, so I'm not yet ready to watch your video of Phoenix. I will when I'm ready, though. Thanks for putting it together for us.

Susan, I understand completely.

Perhaps we can post some pictures of Phoenix here and celebrate his life.

I am so very sorry about the sudden and unexpected loss of this beautiful eaglet. Poor little Phoenix; perhaps the necropsy will shed some light on what happened.

This was posted by Doug on Hornby Chat --

dougcarrick: (15:55) I have had a report from Maj Birch of Mountainaire Avian Rescue about her check up on the condition of Phoenix. First of all, Phoenix is getting treated as an international celebrity. Phoenix has now been sent to Vancouver (by special helicopter) and has been met in person by the head Provincial animal pathologist who will handle the necropsy herself to determine cause of death. Maj has been overwhelmed by the response of people around the world. She has never experienced anything like it. Her report will be made to ajl who will make it know when it is received. Later, another report will be made by the provincial animal pathologist.

We have made a special thread in Our Nature Zone to celebrate the life of Phoenix. Please feel free to add your own memories.

I just saw this

here's the preliminary report from Hornby Eagle Group;

This morning we received the preliminary findings from the necropsy performed on Phoenix.
Phoenix was a female. She died from acute bilateral mycotic pneumonia.

Other tests results will become available over the next week, and will confirm the
causative agent.
Because Phoenix's death was caused by an infectious disease,
sadly, she cannot be returned to Hornby Island for interment.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Maj Birch (Mountainaire Avian Rescue),
Dr. Schwantje (wildlife veterinarian, British Columbia Ministry of Environment)
and Dr. Bowes
(avian pathologist for the British Columbia Animal Health Laboratory) for their
dedication and determination to learn as much from Phoenix as they could.

A.J.L., on behalf of Doug Carrick and the Hornby Eagle Group.

Terms:
Acute: rapid onset
Bilateral: both lungs
Mycotic: fungal
Pneumonia: inflammatory lung condition

Thank you for finding this report and posting it here, kittenface. So very sad. I hope the biologists can learn something from this to help other eaglets. Our Phoenix was so very special and everyone did as much as they possibly could to save her.

Just catching up on all the eagles and came across this very sad news...so tragic. I'm glad they have preliminary test results back..and now to figure out how she could have caught this...since, I believe they said its infectious...I'm sure the parents' immune systems are strong enough to combat it...rest peacefully, Little Phoenix... :cryinggirl:

I sure hope what ever is going on can get taken care of soon its so tragic
this had to happen to such a little angel and hopefully there is some kind
of a treatment that can stop it here and now so that no others have to go thru it

This short video should make you smile. It was one of many clips I had recorded over the season, so I decided to put it in a video.
