That was just wonderful, Beans!!! It still just amazes me to watch these huge eagle parents feed these teeny-weeny babies...they are so gentle!!

You have done such an amazing job keeping up with all these eagle nests and preserving all the wonderful moments of the 2011 season!!!

Video: Don’t Touch My Salmon!

This is a video I made in December, 2007. The action takes place in the Goldstream Estuary, located in Victoria, B.C. I found the perfect piece of music and reworked the video.

Most of the salmon have been eaten, but there are still tasty morsels to be found. Watch the guy in the lower left hand corner. He makes his move at the end of the video.

Picture the Hornby Eagles at a river filled with salmon. A good place for the juvies to learn how to fish.

Video: Memories of the Hornby Island Eagles 2006

The first year the cam was streamed. The quality of the stream was small but excellent (320 x 240 .wmv format). My recording application (FRAPS) was not very good. However, I got some good screenshots, using the PrtSc key.

I uploaded the clips to Putfile (didn't know about YouTube). Thank goodness I did, because when I got a new computer I lost all of the clips. But I went to Putfile and d/l them. Another reason the video is fuzzy.

I loved it. The way the first eagle looked into the cam right at the beginning. Perfect light...

Doug Carrick

This is a notice that I am leaving the whole business of broadcasting the Hornby Eagles. I am absolutely torn asunder by this decision. I read over the recent posts and am reminded of all the people that just love seeing these eagles. I see all the people who followed the eagles to the Hancock Wildlife Forum and it is upsetting to abandon such good people. When I decided to quit two months ago there were hundreds of people who requested that I keep broadcasting by some other mode and they were so pleased when it happened. I am forever grateful to David Hancock who welcomed me back so the eagles could carry on to the satisfaction of so many people. And I know it will be a blow to nightowl who has been the best hostess and moderator I could ever imagine - full of wisdom, balance, and wit ... with a warm welcoming personality. IrishEyes and jbkgrants have been wonderful "oldtimers" on the Hornby Eagle thread. JudyB has watched over this thread so well and Richard arranged the transition to the new site with quiet diplomacy. I am fully aware of the upset this will be causing and genuinely wish there was some way around it.

However I have had long talks with Sheila. The hassles and stress associated with the broadcasting of the Hornby Eagles is taking the joy from our lives. We have had enough. We cannot have our lives destroyed to give thousands the pleasure of the eagles. Other people could arise above these things and continue on despite them. But we are not able to do so - thinskinned? But we are as we are, and have to decide what is best for us. So with understanding and appologies, we are now going on to new things. Who knows what? Doug and Sheila Carrick

Oh my, it will be so sad not to see those beautiful eagles in that beautiful setting, but I do completely understand. Whatever the stressors were/are for the Carricks, they should not have to endure them to the detriment of their health or quality of life. I wish them well and thank them for all the years they allowed us a peek into their backyard.

Oh Pat, this is hard news to hear. Susan, I agree that the Carricks made a heartfelt hard decision that I respect and I hope that they will find peace without the stress relating to the generous gift they shared with us.

Gosh, this is such huge and sad news...and what a great loss...but, boy do I understand...I cannot imagine how stressful it must be and I'm sure it was a difficult decision for the Carricks to make...As wonderful as it has been to watch these eagles, no cam is worth the loss of quality of life..

Just catching up here (in preparation for the new season). That is very sad news. He has been down this path before (wanting to stop) and then continued. I don't watch enough to know, but I wonder why the stress is too much. I guess just the good and bad stuff that come with watching an eagle nest? I'll have to go over and read more.

Well, I just caught up by reading almost 100 pages of the Hancock thread. It was nice to see many old faces on there, and all the supportive comments to the Carricks. Its still sad, and they are a great pair that will be missed by many. I'm pretty sure this was the first streaming eagle cam, and it was a pretty remarkable experience.

Doug Carrick did have the first cam of the ealgtes on the Island. sidney came after hornby failed one yer.

It is too bad that there are some out there who have made things difficult for Doug and his wife. ( lots of the behind the scenes criticisms etc.)I have had the pleasure of meeting them at Eagle Fests, and they truly love the eagles. they will continue to enjoy them, I am sure but we just will not be able to do so.
I wish them well and hope that every once in awhile they will let us know how the eagles are doing.

Kitten, sorry I didn't respond earlier to your post.

Here is a link to the HEGPS fundraiser for Oriole and Shredder:

The story of Shredder's rescue begins here:

NB: post edited after I found Shredder's story in the MARS thread. If you go back to the beginning of the above thread, you will see videos of other juvenile Bald Eagles from Hornby Island in rehabilitation at MARS. I'm sure you will enjoy "bath time at MARS," which shows the juveniles getting their showers.
