Lassen, on the left, is seen hopping up and down branches one tree over from the nest tree. Shasta is in the nest. At 3:40 Lassen takes a short flight from one tree across the nest to another tree! That is the farthest flight I have seen so far!

Awwww that was great ... they are almost ready Kitten! :)

Sauces Canyon chicks were banded today. Had one little mishap! As Jim climbed the tree to the nest the chicks were very scared and the younger chick decided he wasn't staying for the party and bolted right off the nest!! :egg14: They had to go search for him ... but they found him and got a hold of him and they're both back on their nest now. :)

Lassen's Big Day!!!
Published on Jun 9, 2012 by MsEaglewoman

After several attempts, Lassen gains enough courage to lift off and fly away from the Family Tree in the direction his Mama Liberty headed, back toward the nest tree area. The crowd goes wild when they see him fly!!!

Anddddddd .... we have another jumper!!! Darned eaglet took right off as soon as Jim got to the top of the nest!! No sound so we can't hear what's going on. Have to wait probably around an hour perhaps to see if she/he gets returned to the nest.

Jim has a camera on his helmut. He is still in the tree so hopefully they have found her.

What a little stinker! I don't follow that many eagles nests so I don't know what usually happens. Are there many instances of the eaglets jumping, or is jumping rare? Waiting too long to band perhaps... any ideas Patti?

Dr. Sharpe usually always waits to band until the chicks are about 8 weeks. The 'norm' I guess is between 7 and 9 weeks. Sauces chicks were/are just about 9 weeks. This one on PH was 8 weeks yesterday.

As far as I know .. and from watching all these years I've never seen one bolt like these two have. I personally think they should start a little earlier next year!

I'm just hoping it's OK. Jim is still in the tree at 2:33 P.M. EST (11:33 nest time). . . so I'm hoping that means they caught her and are working on her.

Thanks Patti. I hope they find the little jumper too.

With as many nests as California has, it may be difficult to band at exactly the optimal time.

I liked the video, but sure did not like her jumping. YIKES! Scared the be-jeebers out of me!

Glad she is safe and sound, albeit a little upset...

I think from where she was on the nest - it was just too easy of 'an out' for her ... she was gone so fast! Same with Sauces. But they're really lucky neither one of them got hurt!!

Part I pics ... only 8. Jim didn't have much to do once he got there!
