Nest Location: This breeding territory is located in Richmond, Virginia on the James River along the fall line where the river is shallow and flows over rapids. The birds forage along this stretch of river within intermittent pools and rapids. The nest constructed in 2001 was built in a solid top crotch, approximately 90 feet up in an isolated loblolly pine.

Elderly ‘Mod’ Invades Richmond, Virginia!

This will probably come as quite a shock to most of you.

Aside from music, sports, meteorology, radio, writing and enjoying the great outdoors, I’m a very big fan of North American Bald Eagles. Stunner, right? I know. Not really a revelation.

In fact, those who pay close attention are aware that I was invited to serve as a moderator in the Raptor Resource Project sponsored Decorah Eagles chat room during the last nesting season. My user name there was “GoldenEagle4444”. “GE” for short.

This season I’ll be serving in a similar capacity with a brand new family of bald eagles near Richmond, Virginia, sponsored by the Center for Conservation Biology - a research group within the College of William and Mary and the Virginia Commonwealth University.

The CCB Richmond Eagle cam went live tonight 1-15-12. CCB is still adjusting the cam and the stream so for the first few days there will be adjustments in focusing and possible interruptions of the live feed.

Dad at the nest a few minutes ago...he brought in a large stick.

They are still tweaking the cam.

This is the male. One way to tell is his feathers at the back don't create a smooth line between the white and the black (by his neck).
