I highlighted this part of the report, because it is how it should be.

We are all very well aware that so many fledgling hawks do not survive their first year. That's the way of nature. But what happened was not this bird's fault...it is not genetically weak or inferior, and we are not tampering with the gene pool. We are all giving back to this bird the chance at life that nature intended...just a chance, not a guarantee. To the wonderful Hawkwatchers I would like to say, it's always OK to care. Caring is a good thing. Could use a bit more of it in the world."

We care to help

thanks George for caring

progress report on the fi eyass in rehab

from sunniedixie.blogspot.com blog site della reports the eyass is recovering

just thought i would borrow a couple images from her blog

comment form the rehabber.."For birds that recuperate in cages, we apply a special wet paper tape that dries to form a stiff protector, but when re-wet can be easily removed. I learned this technique and much more while working for the amazing Diane Nickerson, director of the Mercer County Wildlife Center, and one of the smartest rehabbers I've ever met. She taught me to be hyper-aware of the condition of a bird's feathers. That's just one small component of the complex art and science of wildlife rehab that hopefully I've given you a glimpse into."

the brown is the protection for the tail feathers while she is in the small cage

the full leg with cast

fotos thanks to della who writes the sunnydixie.blogspot.com FI hawk blog :thumbegg:

no just part of the EHWS being very vocal sounding the alert (Early Hawk Warning System). You know the hawks are there if you hear the robbins and others having fits and loudly vocalizing

Since i have to go see one of my doctors on wednesday early morning, i am going to make a detour beforehand to hopefully capture some more hawk hijinx then since the FI is only about 14 blocks away from my doctor's office at Penn

update on eyass 3. Theyve removed the paper tail protector from the eyass. Theyve been kept in a rather small cage while undergoing treatment and the paper mache like cover protects thier tail feathers to make sure they are able to fly. As of saturday they are talking about moving her from the hawk jail to a larger flight pen in about one week

The cast was removed successfully on friday and eyas #3 has been moved into an outdoor flight cage to tone her wing muscles. So far so good according to the fi hawk blog

eyass 3 has been flying well in the flight pen and will be introduced to live menu items to enable her to hone her hunting skills
EDITED!-an update this am says that eyass three has her hunting instincts working and she has been capturing live prey put into the flight pen for her. I know some may think this is cruel but its a necessity to properly make sure she can be self sufficent when she is ulitmately released back into the wild since the parents have not been able to show her how its done

went hawk stalkign today and managed to capture both parents hanging out on a ledge of the old family court building next to the free library of philadelphia (no theyre not going to be featured in a tv episode of "Divorce Court" )

Image

later dad flew across the street to the free library of philadelphia and dined on a rat from his stash and perched on the corner of the building. I think he was waiting for them to open so he could check out audbons first edition in the rare book collection :lol2:

Image

while it didnt seem that hot the eyasses were pantng as well as the parents and this one i captured perched atop a lampost after being chased by maurauding mocking birds

Image

he stared out on a lampost in front of the rodin musuem '

according to the fi hawk watch blog , the eyas who broke her leg attempting to fledge too early has been hacked successfully yesterday after her time in the flight pen learning to fly, perch hunt and grasp live prey.

she is just in time as the migratory instincts of the red tail hawks is starting to set in for them to begin thier fall migration and to find thier own territory for when they mature. This eyas' siblings have not been seen in about the past 2 weeks so it is thought that they may have begun thier travels and new life away from thier nest :hapdance: :hapdance:
