One Last Bow for Violet and Bobby

They came back for a curtain call.

A few hours before the Hawk Cam was to go dark for the season, the red-tailed hawk parents Bobby and Violet made a surprise visit to their 12th-floor nest high above Washington Square Park at about 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

The couple had not been seen on the nest at the same time since around the time that their daughter Pip fledged in late June.

Violet, who had not been spotted either on the nest or out in the wider world since July 18, was a particularly welcome sight. Read more…

From the article,

"Her right leg with the band on it remains swollen, but she seemed well and perfectly functional."

They have her entire visit archived here.

What a good find kitten! It isn't as swollen as it was.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see a good outcome if that leg remains swollen...how can that remain an "ok" thing... :furious:

NOT a good outcome as far as we are concerned. I so wish they would have tried again. It isn't causing her the terrible stress that it was though; a small comfort at least.

Although no one knows for sure this band caused her injury, I am reminded of Majesty from Flint MI.
Could 2 bands have caused injury this year?

:hi: Dont know anything about Majesty, but re Violet's leg band/injury, had to chime in. Have to say having had experience w USFWS banding practices, valuable info is gained from banding though somewhat invasive due to having to "handle" a wild creature. Much has been learned to help raptor conservation through banding, since now even the cams can read the bands when zoomed in. (PTZ cams) And one day there may be no need for banding, but we are not there yet. Way back in Dec or Oct 2010 I remember seeing a photo of Violets leg on Lincoln Karim's site for PaleMale. He of course has that canon size camera and lens, and had a blown up image of her leg with the band on it. Though he usually directs his comments towards the bander, who I know to be an excellent bander for 30 yrs, I myself noticed that below the band where it was swollen, what appeared to be a puncture dot. There are instances where raptors have been bitten by a snake they had caught that was still alive, as well as creatures alive that have bitten the raptor on the foot or leg before being dispatched. Though not poisonous, the bite causes an infection that causes the area to swell, pushing the band further up, where it would then be too tight, painful, and cause further problems. And of course, that happening, is a freak occurence of nature. I really feel this is what has happened to Violet, and would still like to see her caught and have the problem fixed. Just wanted to throw this out there in defense of USFWS and the folks banding, who are very precise, and do not just "wing it" when it comes to size of band, and tightness, etc. These folks are trying to help the raptors by gaining knowledge, and take great care not to do any harm. Just my thoughts being thrown out there for consideration. THANKS for the posts and video, it was great seeing Violet and Bobby on the nest, nice closure for the season, and knowing Pip is soaring free :loveshow:

just to give yall a hawk report for thanksgiving day. I was fortunate when i came out of the holland tunnel to have not turned off sooner and ended up going over the williamsburg bridge into brookly. After an illegal u turn i ended up in the bowery but i didnt see hunts hall or leo gorcey. finally after driving across town i ended up by washington square and saw a red tail flying above the square. the only reason i knew which square it was was when i looked out my window to see the bobst library. i can not say who i saw but id bet it was one of the two

:girlsad3: Some sad news on the NYU rth female, Violet. Lincoln Karim has posted a picture and some video of Violet on his palemale site. Clearly, her foot is crippled where she is not using it or even putting it down. Checked the NYU site and it is all the talk there also. So sad, I thought the NYU folks and their biologist specialists had previously stated that if Violet's condition worsened, they would look at trapping or netting her, or at least make some efforts to help her.

I check in on Starr Ranch barn owls sometimes, as I dont have the same time I used to with all the cams. A couple weeks back, several posters were concerned because the male's band had moved higher up his leg for several days. Then one morning, it was right back down where it is supposed to be. Dont know why that happens, do they lose some weight at different seasons, allowing the band to move up? Dont know, but do know for sure that Pete has been banding forever, and knows what he is doing. I really feel Violet has some type of infection causing the swelling, not allowing the band to slide down, and actually may be forcing it higher and higher with the swelling from infection. It is painful to watch the video of her eating while standing on one foot only, so dont watch it if it may upset you. Did not want to post a picture from Lincoln's page here, do not want to incite the wrath of Lincoln! If you want to see Violet's condition, you can go to link below. Lincoln has also posted further down under the videos a link to someone at NYU, if you care to pass on a message to them to help. Such a sad situation, I really am so sad for Violet. Humans are truly falling short to help her.
