Website info...
Don’t tap on the glass! This is a live video feed from the 12th floor of Bobst Library at New York University where a
pair of red-tailed hawks — Violet and Bobby — have built a nest, stick by twig, outside
the office of the university’s president, John E. Sexton, overlooking Washington Square Park.
3 Eggs...

We now have an Owl and Other Raptors Nesting Calendar:

Hawks are on this calendar, so please post any new eggs or hatches in Breaking News so the calendar can be updated. Also post there any new nests that you may run across. Thanks!

I started watching this cam on April 5. I recorded a clip, which distinctly shows the three eggs, but somehow I lost it. *sigh*

Image

Video: Bobby and Violet Have Three Eggs

From the website:

“Earlier this year, a red-tailed hawk built a nest on a ledge right by NYU President John Sexton’s window. And, a few weeks ago, another hawk flew onto the same ledge.

Mr. Jerolmack, an assistant professor of environmental studies at N.Y.U., was hooked. He and his wife watched as the pair started flying back and forth to the university’s Bobst Library, at the southeast corner of the park.

Mr. Jerolmack named them Bobby, after the library, and Violet, after N.Y.U.’s school color.

In order to get a better view, the Times set up a small camera (April 5) to keep an eye on the birds. It turns out that they are now guarding three eggs that are estimated to hatch in about two weeks. The stream — available here — will run 24/7; there is an effort underway to add lighting for nighttime viewing.

Recorded 2 PM local time

(don't have dates the eggs were laid)

Just found this at RRP forum :sosad2

Celebrity New York hawk dashes chick hopes: expert
(AFP) – 1 day ago

NEW YORK — One of New York's most closely watched celebrities -- a red-tailed hawk nesting on a Manhattan high rise -- has dashed hopes that three eggs she's been tending will hatch.

The hawk, dubbed Violet, and her mate Bobby have been fussing over the three eggs laid in a nest on a ledge outside the 12th floor office of the president of New York University.

The young family's every move has been watched through the Hawk Cam set up by The New York Times and followed by enthusiastic well-wishers.

But Wednesday, the Times reported: "Barring a miracle, there will be no baby hawks."

"No chance," veteran hawk breeder John Blakeman told the Times.

The hatching window of about 32-35 days has expired and although Violet endeared herself to viewers with her meticulous nesting methods, she and Bobby were probably just too inexperienced at the outset, Blakeman said. "The pair just may have been inept lovers."

New York's concrete jungle is the unlikely haven for a number of wild media stars.

The love life of another red-tailed hawk, known as Pale Male, has been a long-running local media staple.

Last year an adventurous coyote sparked pandemonium after straying into Central Park and in March an Egyptian cobra made headlines after escaping in the Bronx Zoo.

Hawk Cam can be viewed at: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/ ... -the-nest/

Despite the disappointing prognosis from experts, Violet was still sitting on her speckled eggs.

Just when you think things are going good this has to happen
Medical Emergency: Violet in Trouble
There is a serious problem in the nest. Something is wrapped around Violet's right leg -- it looks like a blue plastic line of some sort. Her foot has become severely swollen

Rest of the story and update which sounds promising also video

:agree: My fingers are also crossed. Im afraid it will be hard to catch her. She may fly off the nest for one thing, and am also concerned that she may panic, am worried about the eyass getting caught up in it too or knocked off. I am afraid! But I know something should be done, or she will be unable to stand at all. Even now, it is so swollen, like they said, who knows if it can be even reversed at this point. But lets hope for the best outcome, sweet Violet certainly deserves it. :girlluv: With that said, here is a pic of the little fluffball getting fed. Sorry but the bag in the nest is blocking alot of the views.

Well I hate to say this but it is a good thing the other eggs didn't hatch at least there isn't 3 chick to worry about and from the sounds of it these people are areally good at what they do and they thought it all out instead of just jumping in with out a plan

I agree with you Kitten. One chick is enough for Violet. I hope that band will be successfully be removed, and soon. One must be licensed by the USFWS to put one of these bands on a bird. All bands are species-specific. For example, a band for a Western Gull has a different series of numbers from a band for a California Gull. Within the species-specific bands, there are also different sizes. In Violet's case, I wonder whether the wrong size was put on. If/when the band is removed, the number on the band will be input into a special data base. One can learn, among other things, the date the band was put on and by whom.

It's not easy to catch a flighted bird. Once she spots someone opening the window a few feet away, she'll take off. It takes stealth, patience, and a net.

Video: Violet Holds Up Her Sore Leg

The tight band around Violet's leg is obviously causing her pain. It is hoped she will be rescued, and her leg attended to, very soon.

:sigh It is not looking good tonight for Violet. They say they will make a decision re intervening tomorrow morning, since experts stated final decision that other eggs not viable, so will not be effected by an intervention. Here is a pic of Violet in the nest tonight, and I havent seen her moving, maybe someone else can, but the pixelation on this cam at dusk is not great. Dont like that her face is down, forward. Dont rth's tuck their head in? The position looks odd. Dont like turning in tonight worried for her, but have to. Hope the morning finds her active. Dont mean to be a worry wort either. If somene sees or knows something better, post it please!
