That's what I thought, but it almost looks like one is feeding the other.

I watched them for quite a while...I think they were just "beaking"...

What a beautiful scene you caught with the sailboat, Beth!

Beautiful picture Beth. I still check this cam some, but really don't worry about them as they seem to be doing so well. And mom may be gone. I wonder why that is that the mother leaves so soon and the dad stays behind to care for the chicks. Nature is still a puzzle to me.

The explanation I've heard for the female leaving first is that (at least in North America), the male will usually feed himself before bringing fish to the nest - important because he needs to maintain his strength to continue fishing and because it makes sure the fish aren't flapping around and therefore a danger to small chicks. The female will feed the chicks, and then, if there's food left, feed herself. Especially if there are several chicks, she may be a bit undernourished by the time the chicks fledge - and she's certainly not going to be able to eat peacefully anywhere near her newly fledged chicks!

I'm not sure if that's speculation, or based on tracking data. As GPS units get smaller and more affordable, it's possible we'll have more osprey being tracked - and may learn more about what they do.
