Terrific news about 3 eggs! So glad they are snuggled deep into the nest with this horrible cold weather. Mama knows best... :cheer

Again, thinking about our osprey friends who nest in Finland. Remember our KOO (R.I.P. beautiful girl)? The Finland osprey deal with the cold weather, especially in the spring, and seem to know exactly how to handle it. I'd say the same holds true in Dunedin. Nature is a whole lot smarter than we sometimes realize, IMO.

Lisa (Blackwater webmaster) posted this comment on a Osprey message board...

I (Lisa) wrote the folks we know at the Dunedin Osprey Cam, to ask if the ospreys (which are sitting on at least two eggs) were having any trouble finding fish, since I know fish go deeper in cold weather.

Barb at Dunedin wrote back:

They do go deeper in colder weather and they go deeper in super hot weather too. Any extreme weather has potential to affect the food chain for the Ospreys. We saw that with all the emaciation this year when we had extreme heat and heavy, relentless rains in June and July.

They (the Dunedin ospreys) probably aren't having trouble catching fish and are just out of camera range. We have tilapia here that freezes and floats to the top. Sometimes we get reports of large numbers of osprey, vultures and bald eagles taking the easy pickings in a particular lake or pond in the winter time.
