Beth this is very strange. I've been on site for over a hour. One on a look out pole one on and off the nest, between the perch and nest bowl, no incubation of the egg. But the second mating/bonding on the perch just now. The female remains on the perch, the male flew off, fishing I hope.

I'll post more when I get back to my computer. Slow on an iPhone.

Hope someone's getting some nest cap's with time/date stamps. I have my computer on screen recording but if the cam freezes....

4:37 one on the perch.. One not on site.

Beth, thanks for all the caps... :loveshow:

This egg has not been incubated since it was laid...approximately 5 hours. The air temperature this afternoon was about 63f, with a strong sea breeze. Not likely this egg will be viable.

I don't know why she hasn't started incubating....could be to little to late....hormones. She may lay another egg and start incubation.... I hope not... mother nature!!!

An egg/eggs at this point in the season, will challenge this nest for next season.
:think

Strange - I was thinking about this nest last night and was going to ask you (Jazzel) for an update.

Please explain to us neophytes (but we're learning quickly!) what you mean by:

Mary, what I mean by a challenge for the nest, is the migration issue, late migrations are never ideal.

I have a lot of questions about this nest, being a "neophyte" also...so I went to my trusted osprey expert, ornithologist Rob Bierregaard. The following are my questions to Rob and his answers.

She laid an egg yesterday at 1:30, but neither bird has started incubation.  They both guard the egg, she sometimes stands over it and rolls it, but nothing more. Is this common behavior toward a late season egg?

Typical of lots of 1st eggs. The female wants the 1st 2 eggs to hatch the same day, so she'll wait to incubate until she lays the 2nd egg. Then she'll start incubating. The 3rd egg will come along a couple of days later and begin development as soon as it's laid (because the female will start incubating it right away.

The air temperature yesterday afternoon was 63f and this morning it was 44f.  How long can an egg stay viable under these conditions?

Eggs can go in the fridge for a month before being incubated and will be fine. Because she hasn't started incubating, there's no danger of damage to the eggs.

If they do have chicks this late, how will it impact their migration?

They might be not as strong as young birds that fledged earlier. We've had young fledge on MVY on August 23rd (or thereabouts).  But then they may just take a slightly later start. Remember, we've had 2 birds not migrate until early November.

Wow, interesting answers to your questions Jazzel. I've never read nor heard of Ospreys behaving as geese and ducks in regard to incubating behavior, but perhaps ground nesting Ospreys do. The nesting situation of geese and ducks promote the delayed incubation which is entirely different in comparison to the Ospreys we now see on platforms and in trees. It would be fascinating to see Bierregaard's statistics.
