I contacted Ed, at Lake Barkley, this morning to find out when the cam would be on. The male returned 3/9 last season. Ed's reply

"Very good hearing from you. KEEP has great news; we have the use of our osprey platform that was on camera last season for at least one more season. Unfortunately this platform is in the middle of a new subdivision, Lot 1. Eventually, the new owner will build or sell this lot, so we and the ospreys will have to relocate. George and other KEEP volunteers are preparing the camera for an install session soon. Internet and power are ready at the site or nearly so.

KEEP may have an additional surprise or two this nesting season. More on this later pending developments.

We will let you know when are camera is on or just check our web site for developments. We have had north winds and cold temps but expect our ospreys to start returning to KY this week. It is possible that a few may have arrived already. The weather is improving toward next weekend. Thank you for your continued interest and support."

The cam is on :cheer :cheer

Ed sent me this interesting information about the cam and how they designed their platforms

" Those with road problems may envy our situation at least for nest cam access. A black top road is about12 ft. from our camera pole and osprey platform. The road was widened and repaved with new curbs installed while our ospreys were on the nest last Spring. So we have a super nice paved road with new concrete curbs and drains installed. We were concerned that the construction might cause the ospreys to abandon their nest but having nested next to the paved road that leads to a condo area for several years, they are very used to seeing cars, people walking along the road etc. so they nested successfully as you know. George designed and installed a vertical track system for our camera so we are able to raise and lower the camera along the side of a 55 ft. telephone pole located about 12 ft. from our platform. This also allows adjusting the camera height for those perfect angle images. Our camera is rather expensive so we put the camera up before the season and take it down post fledging for safe keeping indoors. Our cam has remote control so camera administrators can control the camera so the lens can be zoomed, tilted and panned 360 degrees from any where in the world while on the Internet.

After the nesting season we lost several nests due to high winds, that is nests that were not in our KEEP donated osprey platforms. KEEP has donated about 35 metal osprey platforms to date with 1.5 ft. vert. rebar along all sides of the nests. Nests are constructed so that the ospreys place large limbs that are wedged between the rebar so these nests do not blow away with normal high winds. Any nests that are missing when pairs return are rebuilt in several days. I am sure our ospreys will do fine once they return."

Thanks for the info on the nest, Jazzel. I'm glad to hear that the cam's back up . . . I really enjoyed watching the ospreys here last year.

George reported "Jim .... one of the people with me doing the install saw an osprey flying high in the area of the nest."

Looks like Jim also cleaned up the nest

The male returned to the nest last season on March 9, so we should be seeing him day now.
