Osprey chick hatches at Big Muskego Lake
July 1, 2011 2:58 p.m

The Wisconsin osprey population increased by at least one this week with the hatch of a chick on the nesting platform at Big Muskego Lake in Waukesha County.

The chick hatched Monday, according to Muskego officials who maintain the OspreyCam at the nest. The OspreyCam provides still images of the nest which are updated periodically. Click here for the latest image.

Two eggs were laid in the nest, but the first chick, which hatched around June 24, did not survive, :cryinggirl: according to Muskego officials.

Ospreys and other large birds of prey have generally fared well in Wisconsin and throughout North America since the use of organochlorine pesticides like DDT were banned in 1972. The chemicals caused the birds to lay thin-shelled eggs and resulted in extremely poor recruitment rates.

The number of nesting pairs of ospreys in Wisconsin increased from 82 in 1974 to 531 in 2010, according to DNR records.
The osprey was removed from the state list of threatened species in 2009. The birds are known to nest in at least 50 of the state's 72 counties. Several active nests are known in southeastern Wisconsin, including at least two each in Waukesha and Ozaukee counties.
In 2010, 85% of successful osprey nests in Wisconsin were built on manmade platforms like the one at Big Muskego Lake.
The photo below was taken Friday and shows an adult osprey holding a piece of fish in its left foot while the tiny chick is just to the right.
