BETH, yes of course I do :flirty: The cam went down sometime on 1/6 it wasn't working well on 1/5, but then I was having internet problems, so assumed it was a problem on my end :comp . When my problems were resolved on 1/7 late in the day, I found the cam was down, so I emailed Barb Walker. Her reply in the morning, 1/8.

Talked to Sparky. I'm going to work on the cam situation. I'll do everything I can. We need the city to check the power. I contacted them but go no answer back. It is probably the camera anyway. I might be able to replace it and get a bucket truck out there to put a new one up but have to talk to one person in particular. Will have to come from my grant funds and will have be an approved changed.

Barb

This was over the weekend...so only Tuesday..waiting for a fix. I'll email Barb and Sparky tonight to see what if any progress on the cam.

I also have pics to post of the nest, huge intruder issues...that's why no eggs yet..in fact there has been no mating yet. I'll post more tomorrow, if my power goes off in the snow storm about to hit, I'll at least post any cam update I have, from my iPhone, I'm so behind on everything :thud

PATTI, I used "intruder" as a quick answer to the situation

I have been observing this nest, screen recording the nest, since the cam came on line this season...on line..off line.

We started nest observations on this cam last season in September. This season cam was off line until 12/11 , then on, but only for a couple of days. Then off line until 12/23. This is a huge gap!!!

There is no way to know if the issues on the nest now involve the resident pair from last season. There's no way to document if the resident pair, one or both returned to the nest. Ospreys mate (copulate) for 2 to 3 weeks before eggs are laid. If the resident pair were on the nest mating...for eggs due as last season on 12/31????. When the cam was on I never observed, mating, in fact I only observed a pair on the nest, briefly, twice. I did observe a lot of mantling whenever an osprey was on the nest. I"ll post pics of an osprey defending the nest, from the nest, talons straight up at the 'intruder' coming in. Also, although the nest did appear to have a bowl when the cam came on line 12/11, there hadn't been any nesting material added when the cam cam back on line 12/23, or since.

It get's even more confusing because there are many, many ospreys nesting VERY close to the cam platform. When I pointed out my observations to Barb Walker, she went to the site, along with another observer an posted,
on the nest notes this, to me confusing, update...the 1/4 post. I thought she was saying the nest cam pair were ok, nothing unusual..what I later learned, when I asked for more details...the ospreys she was referring to were ospreys in nesting near, very near, the cam nest. She said there are many nests very close together. Link to the nesting notes.

I'll post pics tomorrow...I can't take Photobucket tonight

The cam and nest update from Barb Walker.
Also, my slideshows on what's been happening at the nest.

Yes, I have pictures from Wilf to post.  An eagle buzzed the whole group the other day when he went out.  The female was sitting on the camera when he was there.  They are checking the connections and if a new camera is needed I will make the arrangements.

I don't know how that mate is going to replace her.  They are one of kinds around here.  They are the only pair that stayed at the nest all the time.  I described their habits and some people guessed which pair they were.  I think she was about to lay the eggs.  I think she died with eggs in her.

BETH, could be. The big difference is time. This nest has a lot of time to get started, because they nest so early. A new pair with a later nesting time may claim the nest. The resident pair from last season, if they're still together have plenty of time to work out whatever the issue is, unlike WHOI (although they tried), Hilton Head and Conanicut last season, time was not on their side. I hope the cam is fixed soon...a very interesting nest to observe.

Posted today on the Dunedin Nesting Notes :sfwave:

1/27/11 - 2 ospreys have been seen at the nest but mating has not been seen yet. There are potentially to more ospreys still competing for the platform. A new camera has been ordered and installation is being pre-planned. We hope to restore the camera by February 7th thanks to generous funding by Progress Energy. This will work as long as eggs are not laid. Check the photos section over the weekend for a great story about a nest relocation. The ospreys on the railroad signal crossing will be moved tomorrow !
