Looking like more evidence some ospreys may stay the winter in this area, as the HH moderator posted on their blog. At this stage, not likely an osprey just stopping to rest, but then remember Meadow. Very interesting.

The last osprey counted at Hawk Mountain was two weeks ago. Wish we had a better osprey banding program...

Beth, great catch...again :thumbup

At the nest this afternoon; a non-migrating osprey?

Alison, there's no way to answer your question. What I can do is try to help understanding...

There is no way to confirm the age of the osprey. Confirming a juvie osprey, in November, by eye color and/or feathers, is extremely difficult, even if the caps are perfect. A juvie's eye color would be very close to adult. Feather tips would need a very good pic. NO BANDS.

If the Ospreys on the HH nest are non-migrating adults, only very serious ground observations will confirm this, or a color banding program in the area.

This is a very difficult issue, but, as I've said...look at Meadow...start to finish.

Thank you for the reply, Jazzel, and the information on Meadow.

Alison, my best guess is these are Red-tailed hawks. The pics aren't very clear. Hawk Mountain recorded 119 RTH's migrating last week. The white chest, barring, head and beak (no tail, no feet) is all I can base a ID on, that said, I've never seen two perched together, but don't know behavior during migration.

Beth, wish you had a cap from this morning.

I'll try to get the cam on record in morning.

:hmmmm

I was pretty sure they were Red-tailed Hawks. The cam was very fuzzy; I did enhance the pics a bit. I did have one pic which showed the red tail:

It's great that you and Beth have pics of them too.

Beth, great pic....

As I said, when Alison posted her pics, it would be unusual to see juvie Red-tail Hawks together. But now we know this is an adult pair...that makes sense. A breeding pair. They won't nest on the tower, but can be pests, defending their territory. RTH's nest earlier than Ospreys. Good to know, when/if Osprey nesting has issues..... Love when cams are up year round.
