I was down there Monday and drove by the platform a couple of times. I saw the adults standing there and two more in a low platform on the salt side of the dike, not far away.

A few miles to the east, I was watching a young golden eagle kiting on wind deflected off the north face of a woods, gliding slowly at treetop level, probably looking for squirrels. A young bald eagle swooped at him repeatedly, distracting him, so the golden eagle gave up and went way up, leaving the bald eagle behind and below. Minutes later an osprey appeared sky high and dove 50 feet straight down on the golden eagle, which rolled completely over in the air and showed his feet to the osprey. A few bald eagles were up there too but the osprey chose to harass the golden eagle. Redtails and harriers always make the same choice. Hawks don't like horned owls and they don't like golden eagles either.

In years past I have seen ospreys (including one of the platform pair) dive thrillingly at bald eagles trespassing too close to the ospreys' nest.

Barb, I recall that a year or so ago you mentioned White Pelicans at Pea Island, after I said that some of them have been visiting Blackwater for several years. Harry Armistead, the dean of the birding community around Blackwater, saw 43 there on Sunday and 81 on Friday, the most ever. When they're there they're on the Blackwater River, across the Wildlife Drive from the nest platform and in full view of any osprey perched or sitting there.

Glad you got such a spectacular weekend there Greg. Harry is the king of the eastern shore and a prince on OBX. I've done a few CBCs with him down there, and I love his listserve reports from the eastern shore!! I was in the OBX this weekend, and didn't even go down to check, but did here from a neighbor that a peregrine has been hanging out on my beach!
