Loch Garten osprey diary
News on the blue-ringed male.....

12 hours ago by richard thaxton

Roy Dennis has called me back with details of the male bird that's been chatting up EJ here today at Loch Garten.

He's a local lad, from another nest "elsewhere in Strathspey". He's ringed blue, white letters XD, ringed by Roy at the Rothiemurchus Fish Farm back in 2000. He's part of quite an old pair, his girl is Green J, an old female, but together they have been a very successful pairing, producing young in most if not all years, though not last year, when they and so many others didn't.

On getting my voicemail message, recgnising the XO ring detail I gave him, as likely to be XD, Roy looked-in at his nest this evening. It has partly collapsed and fallen down and XD has begun to put a few sticks into an adjacent tree. This will account for his wanderings to Garten today, he's out of sorts. Roy's on the case and plans to rebuilt XD's nest pdq, which will almost certainly tempt him back from whence he came, leaving the coast clear for our boy, Odin, to arrive and claim the Loch Garten nest and EJ. But, we shall see........

Some sad news
:egg10:
byJohn Ingham

I know some of you have been asking for updates about Rothes and Tore. There is no easy way to say this but it appears that Rothes hasn’t made it. Rothes fledged the Loch Garten nest in 2009, and successfully migrated all the way to Guinea-Bissau. She made a part-migration to southern France last summer before returning to Guinea Bissau. We have not been getting a signal from her tracker for the past few weeks, but regained contact on 25th April, from the island she had been on previously. We continued to get daily signals for the following few days, but they have all been from exactly the same place. It is unclear why the signal kicked in for just those few days, but the fact that it has not moved suggests the worst. We think that possibly a predator or the wind has moved her which would have exposed the solar panel on the transmitter for brief periods. Sorry to have to be the bearer of such sad news, as we all had high hopes for the safe return of this bird.

Tore is still going strong and is moving about daily. Further details on all our tracked birds from the past four years can be found on our website at: www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/tracking/lochg ... index.aspx

Back at Loch Garten, things are ticking over nicely, with both EJ and Odin incubating the eggs, and regular fish being delivered to the nest. This time of year can be very quiet with minimal action on the nest, but I’m sure Odin is making the most of the quiet time before the eggs hatch. If our sums are correct, we could possibly see the first chick of 2012 in a less than a week’s time!
