09:00 HE'S GONE...............

Ceulan left at around 09:26 yesterday morning, he was in south Wales by lunchtime and he roosted last night six miles west of Exeter, Devon.

He's gone on an almost ruler-straight line south, south-east, which is brilliant news

19:40 I'm back at the wi-fi cafe and some more GPS points have come in for Ceulan.

He started off early this morning from the Devon coast and had made the north coast of Brittany by midday. By tea time, Ceulan was on the south coast of Brittany and around an hour ago he has started off south west over the Bay of Biscasy.

He's 250 miles short of the north Spanish coast with daylight fast running out. He has two options. 1. Turn left and make landfall in France. 2. Keep going through the night - he's at least 10 hours away from Spain.

Alwyn tells me that Monty has been around the nest all day with a fish, looking around for his son. If only we could tell him.

Just to let you know - the live streaming will go off for the season at 5pm tomorrow afternoon.

We now have a fraught waiting time before we get more data from Ceulan, sometime on Thursday. Please be patient, I will post the GPS points here the minute they come through.

A positive note to end. Ospreys are well adapted to flying at night time - resent research has shown this. He also left Wales in very good condition - Monty has been a brilliant provider for his son. Ceulan could go several days without eating if he had to.

Good luck mate.

07:20 Bore da from Osprey Cafe

CEULAN IS IN PORTUGAL.

Paul’s weather forecast was exactly right – the N/NE winds blew our boy eastwards missing Spain all together. Another five degrees east and it would have been curtains, Ceulan would have been heading straight in to the Atlantic like poor Deshar did a few years ago.

Ceulan made landfall in northern Portugal at around 05:00 yesterday morning - the Bay of Biscay crossing took him around 11 hours, most of it in darkness. What a bird.

By 18:00 last night he was just south of Porto with signs that he may be stopping for the evening – it doesn’t look like he’s stopped for any significant amount of time since leaving the Dyfi. Has he caught a fish yet?

The latest data transmission window has only just opened and will not close until later this evening. I will be back in Wales by then and will have another look . Google Earth will be updated after the window is closed, so that will be tomorrow. Bear in mind I’m cheating a bit here, I should really wait until all the points are in but, like you, I can’t wait that long! Were you allowed to open one present on Christmas eve?

Looks like Monty has gone – Alwyn actually saw him go. I’ll speak to him later and ask what time etc.

Phew, relief.

Ceulan the Osprey and his EGGcelent adventure: Rescued chick's incredible journey to Africa

Battling for life in summer's floods, the rare young chick was rescued in an unprecedented operation. Now 103 days old, he's on an epic 2,600-mile flight to spend winter in Africa...monitored all the way

Dyfi Osprey Project - 17:30 Never mind Portugal - Ceulan is motoring on…

At around 09:00 this morning he left Portuguese airspace and was 105 miles south of the Algarve coast by 16:00 this afternoon. The coast of Morocco is a further 150 ahead of him - he should make most, but probably not all, of this distance in daylight this evening.

Good news - as often happens, some more GPS waypoints have come in from his earlier journey through Portugal. It looks as he has stopped a couple of times to fish. What do you think? Google Earth is updated.

Ceulan roosted for the night by the Moroccan coast, but the following morning, September 9th, he was off again. By lunchtime he was 40 miles further south and crossed the same path that his brother Einion did last year. Einion was in the same place at the same time on the same day - September 9th. They were so close, they would have seen each other in a one-year time machine.

As I write on Monday evening, it's almost unthinkable that Ceulan only set off the previous Monday. He's travelled over 2,000 miles in that time, at an average of around 300 miles per day. Ceulan left a wet and windy Wales just a week ago and is now over the largest desert on the planet - the Sahara. Insanely amazing.

08:00 Bore da. Ceulan's data window has opened early this morning.

After roosting on the desert floor (probably) on Monday night, Ceulan flew 330 miles yesterday - south westerly. That's the equivalent of flying from London to Edinburgh.

Ceulan flew directly over the mine that Paul mentioned in a post and last night he probably roosted on the desert floor again on the Western Sahara - Mauritania border.

Ceulan is now just 360 miles short of the Senegal River - it's between Nouakchott and Dakar on the map. This will be the first bit of water he will have seen for days. Will he get there today? More points when the window closes tonight.

20:15 Ceulan has made it to the Atlantic coast.

He's flown 230 miles so far today - the most westerly point on the map is his latest one from 18:00 - a couple of hours ago. Ceulan is now only 220 miles north of the Senegal River and 440 miles short of the Gambia.

Google Earth won't be updated until tomorrow but this could well be his last download now until Friday by which time, hopefully, he will have reached the promised land.

If you want to have a look at Google Earth yourself, Ceulan is on the shore line near a town called Iwik, Mauritania. Looking at the the photos near Iwik, there are plenty of pelicans around on what looks like a marshy lagoon - and we all know what they eat..

Ceulan's window has just opened and Friday afternoon's flight is in. By 18:00 on Friday evening, he was still heading south and was just 34 miles short of the Senegal River. Ceulan is within reaching distance of crossing the largest desert on earth and making it to water and food.

More points tonight hopefully. Ok, hands up who didn't see the Welsh flag in yesterday's photo!

Senegal - Posted 17-Sep-2012 in Ceulan by Emyr

Ceulan has reached the Senegal River. It took him five days to cross the Sahara desert from the Atlantic coast of northern Morocco, a journey of over 1300 miles. He ate little, if at all, during this time. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of Ceulan's migration has been the direction he has chosen. He seems to go in straight lines, never veering off the conventional osprey migration route and 'getting lost'. The directionality of his Wales to Senegal migration has no doubt helped him get there in record time. His migration has been problem free, quick and text book in execution.

After crossing the largest desert on earth, things are again looking greener for Ceulan

16:00 Ceulan's data window has just opened, very late this time.
He's pottering around on the Senegal River and one of her tributaries, three miles to the north.
He's hopefully fishing successfully and fattening himself up.
He'll be seeing a lot more ospreys coming over in the next few days and weeks...
