I was watching Molly and the owlets earlier that night, east coast time 9pm - 10:30pm est. Molly did in fact step full force on Kelly, clearly by mistake, and didnt realize it at first even, staying on her a few seconds. I was looking for her talons, and feared one might have punctured the owlet somewhere. Did not see Kelly move around alot after that, though I hoped it was ok because I thought I saw Mollly give her a bite of food. Several hours later, she was dead. Clearly, it was an accident, and they do happen in nests. On the site, the people who said they saw this happen were "shussed" by other viewers, being told it was negative comments. Others PM'd people, not saying anything on the chat. I believe the new people watching and asking questions should be educated with facts, not guesses. Some said they were sure Molly would NEVER step on one of her owlets. Well, things happen, Molly did in fact step hard on her. Prior, Kelly had gotten tossed and flipped, and Jody has been stepped on by Molly today in fact and somersaulted by a foot in error. There is food deliveries each night, just the minimal now since they are small. But I have seen a "tiny" owlet die, from starvation, with a nestbox full of prey items. The little one just did not get enough to make him grow, and after 2 days of minimal bits, an owlet can die of starvation. "Just enough to survive" is not enough to keep an owlet allive after a couple days of that. So I am concerned for Jody, and a little bit for Molly because she at times, seems a little distracted or unsure or nervous or whatever you want to call it. That is not to say she is not a good mother because she definately is one of the BEST moms we have seen yet. So I will watch and hope Jody can get her share and then some so she makes it. I just think the people should be told straight up that things happen, and yes, Molly may have stepped on her owlet by mistake. It doesnt make her a bad mommy. People who have only been watching owls for a few days are making statements and misleading people. Don't like that, it should be an enjoyable experience, and a truthful, educating one, regardless of the age of the viewers. Just use tact and be honest.
