We don't often see what happens before and during the mating phase of Barn Owls.

Here - is the nestbox of a resident (ringed) female. Her mate died/disappeared in the beginning of this year.
A male showed up around March 27. Courtship behaviour was seen, but apparently, it didnot work out between them.
It seems a few weeks later another male showed up. And now the process starts - he brings a mouse, she doesn't show up, he eats it, after some days she seems to accept him, still later he is seen in the nestbox and then both are inside - he's seen trying to mate with her.

Some video's:

April 16 - courtship - and male almost knocks female off the ledge ...

April 22 - male w/a mouse, she's not there

April 24 - they roost together inside the nestbox

Thanks Aurora, that webcam is all new to me! It's indeed in the Netherlands. Amazing, it's been on line for 2 months .... No idea how many eggs are in this clutch.

It says there's always been either Barn Owls or Little Owls in this nestbox.

there's 3 eggs left to hatch, the first owlet is 3 or 4 days old and the second is 1 or 2 days old.
I think it's 4 days and 2 days but not sure.

Heligan Barn Owls:

Not sure if they're all still around (hard to distinguish) - oldest now 18 days already, nr. 5 would be 8 days.

Here's two looking up at Mom after she jumpes back from the entrance:

:eggclap: On 4/17 our beloved Pro-Riet Swiss Owls had their first hatch of 6 eggs. Have been watching and trying to get a pic of all the owlets, but mom swiss is sooo protective, and with the "stutter" camera, its been hard to get a headcount. I saw at least 1, possibly 2 eggs cast aside about 3 weeks ago, and believed there to be 4 owlets.

FINALLY I got a pic, and I believe there are 4. Mom might be blocking out a smaller one, dont know, but this is the first time I got a scap of 4 sets of eyes LOL

These guys are fun to watch once they start moving around, in about 2 weeks. Of course you can always enjoy them NOW too!

Kittenface, this one is for you, just got it while typing this up.

Yup kittenface, the ole horndog is STILL at it!

:egg14: The Swiss Pro-Riet webcam has designed a new webpage, its gorgeous. The cams are all visual at the same time on one page, so I am sure the link has to be updated. Here are a couple of pics of the owlets growing soooo big now! One of the parents is in the neighboring box hiding out for a break LOL!

:egg5: :egg14: The Swiss Pro-Riet barn owls may have a FIRST here - maybe someone with a better view can check it out!

The 4 owlets have been banded (ringed) on their right leg a few days ago. I noticed yesterday mom and dad were sleeping in the OTHER nestbox kamera 4 Montligen Sud (south). The owlets are in kamera 3 Montligen Nord (north). Dont know the distance between these two boxes, but in the past, parents went into sud nest to rest away from owlets, etc during the night, and during the day to sleep sometimes.

Guess what I found today?????

Image
Our 4 owlets, not yet fledged, ringed, hanging out wingersizing in kamera 3 Nord as expected.

AT THE SAME TIME....

Image
Parents?? on EGGS in kamera 4 Sud as NOT expected!

Can anyone see if one of the parents are ringed or banded on their right leg? Where this is a sibling claiming the nestbox? Would the parents allow it that close or far from nestbox Nord? Or is this the parent pair already laying eggs AGAIN for a second clutch??

Either way, THIS HAS NOT BEEN SEEN HERE BEFORE!

I will have to translate their info page tonight and see if there is any explanation or comments on this.

WOW!

Yes LeeLee, I think you can safely assume that it is the parents working on their second clutch - I saw this I think 2 years ago when a pair of Barn Owls in Israel (webcam in Tirat Zvi) had 3 clutches in one season, and indeed, the female was already incubating while the "youngsters" were still around (and hid the view on the breeding female) - busy guys, those Barn Owls!

:egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :dancing3: Swiss Pro-Riet Barn Owls are parents again!!!

At least 3 have hatched out of the 8 eggs laid, starting on July 11th. I think last time she had 2 duds because with 6 running around, the last 2 eggs got tossed around like the balls on the pool table LOL. So I think this is safe kittenface, fingers crossed.

Here is a pic of that horndog Dad sticking his face in to see his cherished offspring, while mom is tending to them. The dads sure do like to take a peek now and then and pat themselves on the back for a job well done LOL :teehee:
