At this point, we're posting pics of the owl under Cobb (since its in the Cobb igloo), but SGB may decide in the future to post them under Barn Owls. She sure is a beauty!

Falcon sighting! Yeah!

For the last hour, a pair has been playing around the top of the Monroe Building (the very tall building on the east side of 14th street, situated right between 14th and I-95 South). Per a conversation with Barb, they seem to be adults as they have the white/gray underside and they certainly seem to be skilled flyers. Several of us watched them during the lunch hour, none of us had cameras here of course, and our simple field binocs are not strong enough to see detailed features or tags. Unable to tell if they are Ozzie & Harriet or a migratory pair.

Interestingly, the top of the window structures must have some sort of lip and recess, as one of the pair really likes to go down into a recessed area (on top of the window structures on the north side of the building) and pop his/her head out over the lip from time to time. More than a few chuckles here everytime someone caught him/her peeking out (need binocs to catch that).

The other falcon has taken up perch on the top of the window structure on the west side of building (top left, or northwest corner) and is surveying the territory westward. That falcon is viewable from my office window using the naked eye... and just flew off (12:41PM)

I'll post pics later to show where they are hanging out, and will bring cam gear to work if they decide to hangout on Monroe regularly.

Cheers all.

They are back now.

The picture at the following URL shows the Monroe building and the photographer was standing at the far west side of our parking lot (the cars you see are actually in the far east side of our lot). Our building and parking lot are northwest of Monroe.

In the picture, the left side of Monroe faces north and the right side faces west. It is essentially the same view that we have, but we're 13 stories up.

The falcons are perching on the top-left corner of the west-facing window structures, and playing around the ledge on the north side.

Thanks Mike! This seems like a logical building for them to hang out on....it is the tallest building. I can't believe they haven't been around earlier.

If they would move the crate, I think we'd have seen them rebonding again at the scrape.

I wonder if they are installing another camera? That item on top
of the nest box wasn't there before.

Wachovia Securities was purchased, who owns the building. Last time I was down there they were changing out the signs. That's probably why the box came down too.

Pen Removed
DGIF biologists accessed the ledge yesterday to remove the pen. The pen was initially installed to keep the young birds from leaving the ledge before capable of flight. Following the successful fledging of the falcons - it was decided to leave the pen in place to allow the adults to become acclimated to it during the post-fledging period. Our hope is that allowing the adult falcons as much time as possible to become accustomed to the pen will reduce any stress that it's installation during the breeding season might cause.

Given the history of early fledging attempts with this pair, and the young male chick's fall from the ledge this summer - it is likely that we will continue to employ the pen to ensure the safety of the chicks.

The adult falcons are not being seen as regularly in the downtown Richmond area over the last several weeks. This is not unusual for this pair, which although non-migratory does seem to expand their area of operation during the non-breeding season
