Thanks Reenie for the morning observations. You know, I've always wondered what the success rate is for hunting. That's what it all boils down to I guess, the hunting skills of the male to provide for the female and young. Lil Dad is always dragging something in for the babies. Never had to anxiously wait and wonder if the chicks are going to be fed here like at other nests I've watched. :cheer

I read somewhere that Birds of Prey are only successful in about 20 percent of their attempts. So they only manage to catch their prey 1 out of 5 times!

Good to hear about NG & Lil Dad's routine this morning--thanks, Reenie!

Well, they are gone now.

one more shot and I am off. I guess everything is ok, just seemed like a lot of activity going on. But impossible to tell on stills.

Hooray, I was so happy to see a peregrine illustration on the cover of the iPad app iBirdProHD - our cover bird :)

Update: well I wasn't accurate; and Jane is correct (see following replies) This is an Aplomado Falcon (it's listed in the app); well at least there's a falcon on the cover! and a beautiful falcon.

Beautiful bird picture, Dotty! What kind of falcon is that supposed to be? Looks like a peregrine except for the white over the eye. Juvies have that white, but they're brown. My bird book shows a prairie falcon with the white over the eye, but they're also brown.

Dotty and others, the bird is an Aplomado Falcon. They are residents in Mexico, Central America and down into at least northern South America. There is an reintroduction program going on in south Texas to try to restore the former breeding population there. I've been lucky enough to see these beauties on several birding trips, including Laguna Atascosa NWR in the vicinity of South Padre Island in Texas.
