Still just two...I've had the cam up all morning (since about 8)...they must have had a very early feed, as I haven't seen one...

Bad news alert! Found article on littlebirdie.com from Topeka newspaper that says the third chick hatched and died on Thursday and was fed to the first two chicks. Parents are Zeus and Hope.

Sorry ... just trying to document.

Thanks, MISue--we need to know the bad news as well as the good. As to the falcons killing one of their babies, if that did happen (which I question), something must have been wrong with it. That would make it the one that hatched out of that shell with the break in it, & it probably wasn't healthy & may have died on its own. We on this forum are pretty savy when it comes to falcon behavior, & I've never heard of falcon chicks killing smaller siblings, although the smallest may not be able to compete with larger siblings for food, and therefore die. Now other raptor chicks will kill their siblings, which is why I watch falcons (cause I couldn't handle what goes on in other raptor nests).

Well to me I don't know if they know what they are talking about the second chick for one hatched tuesday we have pictures not wensday. I don't think myself that that happened but who am why would the parent do that anyway they have PLENTY of food those chicks are not going hungry I bet if they looked around they would find it outside of the nest

Thanks MISue for bringing that article to our attention...I do find it very hard to believe that a parent deliberately killed the 3rd chick. Of course, unless someone has a frame by frame video of the occurance, we will never know and can only guess to what happened..Now, feeding the dead chick to the others...that happened this season at Derby...and was a first for me..I'll be honest, that really shocked me..I know it happens with owls and storks, for example...but falcons? This season has just been so weird!!!

I just read the only response to the article here is what it said

It wasn't the siblings...

Not such a great headline. It wasn't the siblings who killed the newly hatched third one, it was the male bird, Zeus. He then fed it to them, but they weren't responsible for that.

I'm wondering why the male bird did this; is there a limit to how many hatchlings peregrines can care for? Or is he just a little "tetched?" He was responsible for breaking all the eggs the first two years he and Hope nested here, right?

Well, this is interesting! Although recent news items report the resident male to be Zeus, it is in fact a son of Zeus, named Doorly, b/g L/K, born 1999 Woodmen Tower.

Doorly has had a rough history. He arrived in Topeka in 2001 and is known to have destroyed all the eggs in the nest for the first six years! In 2007, he destroyed three out of four eggs, successfully hatching one chick they named A.J. after one of their employees.

In 2008, plans were made to trap and remove Doorly, but alas, they arrived too late and missed their opportunity. Four eggs were incubated, two hatched, but one died, resulting in only one chick being banded.

Again in 2009, only one chick was banded.

I read a 2010 press release by Westar Energy that refers to this year's adult male to be the same one who has been known to destroy all the eggs in the past, so I assume it's still Doorly. I could not see any pictures of the male's L/K band, have you?

Very interesting, MISue! I haven't seen the male at the box, so I haven't gotten a band ID.

I was confused when I heard about the male here having the name of Zeus, cause I know there is a pretty famous tiercel in Omaha by the name of Zeus. I thought it was surprising that they would have 2 tiercels with the same name in nests with fairly close proximity to each other.

Wonder if they were trying to capture Doorly because they thought he was deliberately destroying the eggs. I assumed that he accidently stepped on the eggs, but for it to happen all those years I don't think it could be accidental. Then with the report of him killing the third chick here, it really makes me question his mental state (although that egg sat there with a crack in it for days (at least), so that chick was probably not very healthy & possibly even died in the egg.
