Another shot of the one on the box right now. This is definitely an adult. Uh, right?

Well, I'm off to bed. I'll look at the pictures again tomorrow, but It must be one of the juvies. Now which one? Goodnight.

Does anyone think the feathers on the falcon on the left look too light to be an adult? I think it's time for a stiff drink :toast

Mmmm ... curiouser & curiouser - looks like an adult female but it sure doesn't have any bands - don't think last season's juvies would look this mature in plummage as yet - so it could be an "interloper" - oh dear! - is this why Havoc has been showing off his box, etc ...???

I do not believe this is Sheila or Havoc. Could it be Froona?? She's a big girl whoever she is!! I've been trying to look through my pics for a good comparison but I forgot my Alcoa pics are messed up.

Hey PattiO I think you are right about this not being Sheila.I wandered myself if this could be Froona, but I didn't think the juvies were still around.Maybe someone can e-mail Alcoa and see what they say.I'm turning in for the night but I'll check in tomorrow to see what everyone else thinks. :waveht:

Well, Sheila and Havoc both have bands. This bird clearly has no bands at all. I would think it would take at least a full year before a juvie turns to full adult plumage. And what about the beak color .. ?

I'm right behind you pearl. Too tired tonight at it's too late already!

I am looking back in my pictures.
I do not have the answers but if you really look closely there is still sort of mottling at the neckline which could indicate a juvenile.

This one looks too comfortable at the net box and so could be a juvenile.
sometimes the shading is sort of hard to tell. I am going to look back on some Edmonton shots and see what I can see with our juvenilles. Remember they have been fledged for quite some time now .

I am grasping at straws here I know .

From Nov28 almost 2 months ago.

I think the coloring was starting to lighten around chest area then Do not think my shot is Froona but beak is color of beak in your shot

Well - whoever it is she was "ee-chupping" with Havoc - so I'm thinking/hoping she's not a daughter ;)

We thought this was a juvenile

I am trying to be optimistic here but this is either this years juvenile or another young falcon (maybe a year old or so)

this will be something to watch . I will be away for a few days so hopefully you all will catch something

Wow! What a mystery! My first thought was that maybe it was a juvie from last year, but that isn't an option cause they were banded, & there were no females last year. If it was a falcon passing thru, who were they bonding with--is there a pair passing thru that thought they found a great place to have a nest later this year? Did anyone contact Elise? If not, I'll send her some of these pics & maybe she can figure out what is going on. :?

And thanks for the pics & detective work!

Good catch, ljames, with noticing there were no bands. I wasn't even looking at that until you mentioned it. Gosh, I sure hope nothing has happened to Sheila. And, thanks to pearl1 for capturing so many great shots, including the bonding one! I agree that the folks at Alcoa should be notified of this mystery girl.

According to the Oregon Zoo site, "They gain their adult plumage after their first annual molt at one year."

According to FWS "These birds acquire adult plumage in their second year, but most do not reproduce until age of three."

According to the State of NJ DEP: "Adult plumage is acquired the summer after fledging."

If you remeber they were putting up a nest box somewhere else around here.

so maybe they are attracting more falcons. good in one way and not good for existing pair.

I hope things are O.k.

I will check here first when I get back.

the female at Edmonton was 2 when she first nested at Edmonton and had only 2 eggs and one was viable. so we know they do mate at year 2 but she , at that point was easily identifiable becasue she had not quite acquired The full adult plummage . she was darker on the upper breast .

Hey pearl, if I had know we were going to have a stiff drink I would have stayed up with you longer. :toast

I'm getting a bad feeling about the falcon with no bands. I wasn't watching but is that the falcon that was actually in the box bonding? Now it could just be a female passing through but if that's the same one in the box with Havoc, that spells trouble. You know, was it the day before when there was some confusion also when I think catwoman saw an adult on top of the box leaving us to wonder if it was a juvie or an adult. I sure hope that nothing has happened to Sheila.
Hope the people at the site can give us the scoop on what's really going on, if they know. I don't think it would be too late to see a juvie, just not in bonding mode. :?
