I wrote my letter only this morning. I went out on a limb a bit, but I think that's o.k and I did ask about that durn box....in the nicest sort of way, of course.

You know something just dawned on me they never said that they positively
ID'd Havoc did they?
I looked back thru and didn't see anything they just said that there were 2 falcons
Maybe S & H are somewhere else and this is a new pair.
This is what I would like to believe that they are together somewhere else

Nice thought KF - but didn't we observe Havoc at the (old) box echupping with the new female???

New update at Alcoa today in response to the many enquires  about Sheila:

Alcoa Anglesea Peregrine Falcon Webcam

Monday September 6, 2010

This week we have received several enquiries asking for clarification on what has happened to Sheila.

With the appearance of a new female in Sheila's breeding territory it is most likely that Sheila has died. We have not found any physical evidence of Sheila but given the appearance on a new female, it is the most likely assumption. Peregrine falcons mate for life, it would be almost impossible for another female to breed with Havoc if Sheila was alive. It is only if a member of the pair dies, the surviving falcon (in this case Havoc) will accept a replacement mate.

I'm biting my tongue on the two totally incorrect statements they've made; suffice it to say: stick to rocks and soil people - leave the avian biology to the pros!

Ditto Carly! I read that and while the fire was still hot, so to speak, I emailed them a correction. I did so respecfully but didn't mince words. There is no owner's manual when it comes to animal behavior. Nature has the last word.

Edit; to correct spelling

Yo! Good on you Mick :attention: Now it will be interesting to see if they respond but at least you put it (the correction re peregrine behavior) to them.

I just sent a long rambling letter to Alcoa in another effort to get our nestbox back. They were nice enough to respond again, but not sure there was much progress, although she is sympathetic.

Here is the response.
=================================================================================

dear lynn,

We have had the same thought ourselves regarding the aggressive behaviour of
Sheila vs Ava and in some respects it is unlucky that Ava didn't get the
opportunity to prove herself at the nest box on the water tower before it was
dismantled. However, whilst Sheila was particularly aggressive, Havoc has also
swooped people. We will assess what the new couple’s behaviour is like and give
them every opportunity to try the new nest box. If the new nest box is
successful it will be better for the falcons and our employees in the longer
term keeping the interaction to a minimum – clearly the swooping was a sign of
angst from the falcons. We will assess at the end of the season what might be
the next step if the new nest box proves unsuccessful.

=================================================================================

I had asked about the possibility that Ava might respond differently and be less aggressive than Sheila, thus allowing the nestbox to be reinstalled.

Very nice job ladies with excellent emails...I'm glad they are responding...and I'll be interested in if you hear back, Mick...while we aren't biologists, I think we've watched enough nests and collectively gathered enough information to know of their inaccuracies...and we have plenty of examples to back them up too...It is entirely possible that Sheila has died...but to say that Havoc wouldn't mate otherwise is a tad erroneous. (is that the right word?)

Hi Everyone! :-)
Here is the reply. The death date was removed from the family tree.

"thank you for your email.

the death date has been removed from Sheila on the family tree.

the concept behind the divided nest box was to give the male somewhere to roost rather than on the Power Station structure.
if Havoc roosts on the Power Station it brings him closer to our employees increasing the likelihood of angst which can lead to swooping and striking of our employees.
there was a divided box last year as well however the camera was only orientated towards the main nest box with the female and chicks.

Anglesea Power Station"

Edit; to add my email (remember, I went out on a limb a bit here to make a point) I wrote this after the first update about Sheila's assumed (presumed) death.

"Subject:Sheila and the new nest box
Message:Hi
I am writing to you to thank you for updating your site as to the assumption that Sheila has died. It is my experience that very occasionally the resident male will accept a new female after the resident female has been banished but has not actually died. A date on the chart without finding remains is misleading in general.

I am hoping that the new female and her mate will accept the nest box. This is the first time I have seen a nest box of this design. Could you explain the advantages of the divided box?
Thank you for your time,"

Cleverly stated Mick! You could be a great diplomat

However they still manage to skirt around a direct answer as to "why" the divided box in the first place!

There was a divided box last year? Really? It would be interesting to know how tall the new box is. I'm guessing 20-30 feet maybe. Well, it looks like we are out of luck for this year. Thanks to all who wrote and for posting the answers, even if we don't like those answers. At least Alcoa is learning something from all of this.

Thanks Mick for your e-mail and for posting the response. There was a divided box last year? I was wondering why they never pulled the cam back as they had in years past. Did it work ? Did Havoc roost there? At any rate, it seemed to be big enough for the family.

I sent one last e-mail asking her to reconsider placing the nestbox back on the tower to give Ava a good chance at possibly a first time nest. While I was at it, I went ahead and asked if she could turn the cam on at the new nest, just in case, so we could be on the lookout for falcons. Well, I did tell her that I was a falcon fanatic and proved it by all my e-mails. I'm expecting the police at my door any minute to arrest me for harrassment.

We have done all that we can do to help Havoc and Ava. I think, if nothing else, they might have a better understanding of how important these birds are to people.

Thanks to everyone ... you guys did a great job with the corrsepondence to Alcoa.
So sad that we will not see "the Sheila stare" this year... and we have lost our
S&H (green stamps) connection.

I got my reply finally and it seems to be the exact same as Mick's I wonder if
more than just us was asking about the nest

if Havoc roosts on the Power Station it brings him closer to our employees increasing the likelihood of angst which can lead to swooping and striking of our employees.

that was funnee Carly - thanx for the giggle - not pterodactyls!!! :laugh

And as for getting a straight answer out of Alcoa ... well I think it is just about impossible re odd box, new female, old female, etc - we just have to let 'em go for this season I think ... but that reminds me that our new potential nest cam is getting closer with the photographer Robyn nearly back fr her time away & eggs may have already been laid ... etc, etc!!!

ljames, you have given me an idea. I think I'll contact the newspaper where the article appeared and ask them to forward an email to the lady inviting her to join us here.

Pru, in case you missed the article which kittenface posted in the IN THE NEWS section, here it is:

Bumped this up. Reenie reminded me that these falcons did have 3 eggs--I'd forgotten! :sunblink: The first egg was laid on 8/21, so it won't be long til there are little ones! :flirty:

Carly, thanks for the laugh, although I'm sure the reason for the reference wasn't amusement...
