Happy November! Image

The waiting game
Posted on 01-11-2010

After some unsettled weather over the weekend the peregrine family are all on the tower this morning, Swift and Solo in the eyrie, Beau up on the top and everyone’s just… waiting…. much like a surfer does, waiting for the ideal swell, or a good wave to roll in. On a fine, sunny morning (with reports of showers later) it’s a time for a little repose and thought before starting the peregrine work week.
On Day 27 Solo is developing quite an array of wing and tail feathers now and is taking on that awkward “teenager” appearance!

Thank you Nancy

Isn't that great? :pumpbounce: Quite a contrast to other nests where the "observers" aren't even aware when a chick goes missing! :o

Thanks for the update, Mick!

Wonderful new videos Check out the feather bed in the box.

A day of interacting for Solo
Posted on 02-11-2010
Solo is beginning to learn the shape of the eyrie and was seen at different times trying to climb up the slope at the far end for some reason. Lots of time, and lots of feathers to play with. We only watched one feeding session today but Solo isn’t suffering at all and is putting on height and weight close to form.
Video clips today include Swift showing close interest in our nest camera, Solo playing with some feathers, and some cute parent/chick interaction and sideways looks!

Oh my, that little Solo is too precious, especially now that he/she has a mask. Do you think Solo is a girl? They haven't already banded Solo and I missed it, I hope.

thanks for posting the videos Mick.

No ljames - I think they said that they do not need to be banded.

Solo does seem big ljames and I always think of Solo as "her". Then again Solo's the only mouth to feed. She/he is so puffy it looks like she's wearing an overcoat.

Dining on a two-course meal
Posted on 02-11-2010
Early breakfast this morning with Beau flying up with first course,
which Solo proceeded to steal from him. Beau had that look of resignation so flew
off again while Solo struggled with the new beak to make head-way on the meal.
The feathers looked like a promising start but they didn’t provide much nutrition.
Still lots to learn for Solo about what’s worthwhile polishing off and what’s not!

And just when it looked like the task was going to beat little/big Solo’s efforts
Swift flew in with the second course just minutes later which this time was correctly
dealt with and both Solo and Swift ended up with a sizeable breakfast, feathers,
feet, legs and all.

Completion of the first course
(Note from editor – modified the colours in the calendar to the right so you can see
more clearly which days have posts; hovering over the date will show you post titles.
Hope that helps! … Scott)

Thanks, Kitten! I think we can all picture Solo grabbing the food from Beau & trying to self-feed! :leaves:

Quiet sleepy day
Posted on 03-11-2010

Like many quiet days lately Solo has spent lots of time sleeping the hours away between feeds leaning over against the sloped flooring at each end of the eyrie. After disappearing for an hour or two the other day we found the chick had been snoozing underneath the cameras in the camera/s blind spot, but returned to sight, much to everyone’s relief.

Image
Solo snoozing the hours away

Quite alarming to see, until one notices breathing and the odd movement in the cameras. It happens a lot and without Beau and Swift (or other siblings) its understandable behaviour, but we’re still weary of our charge. it’s not through a lack of food as the meals are still coming quite regularly and growth and stature are on track.
On Day 29 we’re still looking at approximately 10-13 days before any attempts at fledging will occur (we hope!).
We’ve added a link to our fellow peregrine falcon watchers’ Forum http://www.species-at-risk.mb.ca/projects/pfrp/forum/programs/index.php in Manitoba, Canada. Thanks to Kinderchick and the Kinderchicklets for the link – we’ll be watching with enthusiasm!

Picking at feathers
Posted on 04-11-2010

Solo has spent spare time, when not sleeping up against the sloped ends of the eyrie, picking at feathers and whatever seems to be on the floor. Now is the period when strength to grasp objects and tear bits is improving, and at one stage when Beau brought in some food Solo jumped up and took it straight off dad; a bemused Beau took one look back before flying off, to be shortly replaced by Swift again with more food.
